RPGnet: Review of The Compact Trail of Tsathoggua
The first scenario "The Trail of Tsathoggua" is a nice archaeological expedition to Greenland to investigate a huge wall of stone recently exposed from the ice covered in hieroglyphs from an ancient culture predating the Egyptians and Sumerians.
The stories are good for introducing new players or investigators alike, and they are straightforward enough so that players who do a little planning and keep their head about them will come out the other side sane and healthy.
Artwork by Steve Purcell (from the original edition) and Jason Eckhardt (especially drawn for this edition) is nice, capturing the sense of remoteness and the cultures born of icy wastelands, but it is the cover piece of a Spawn of Tsathoggua by Steve Purcell which is my favourite.

The problem, as always, lies with the selection, and while the original Clark Ashton Smith tales about the transuranic toad-god Tsathoggua are still quite enjoyable, not all the contemporary stories that have been added to complete this offering are up to their standards.
I don't like it when the story bludgeons you over the head with the fact that it is mythos, and that there is a mythos, instead of the mythos entities/trappings being props for the story.

When I was welcomed into the weird fiction small press scene in 1994, I was overwhelmed by the kindness of some of the field's top editors and publishers.
One thing you can be sure of: Tsathoggua was founded with the concept of publishing affordable treasures, not elitist collector's editions costing an arm and a leg.
This leaves little time for Tsathoggua, but I intend to push forward with the small press...and breathe life to some new titles.

"Of the coming-down of the Great Old Ones from the stars, it is written in the Book of Eibon that the first who came hither was the fl thing, Tsathoggua, who came hence from dim Cykranosh not long after the creation of life on this planet.
Not through the starry spaces came Tsathoggua, but by the dimensions that lie between them, and of His advent upon this planet, the place thereof was the unlitten and subterraneous gulf of N'kai, wherein whose gloomy depths He lingered for innumerable cycles, as Eibon saith, before emerging into the upper world."
