Andrei Osterman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The dispositions previously made by Osterman enabled him, however, to counter the blow, and all danger from Sweden was over when, early in September, Field-Marshal Lacy routed the Swedish general von Wrangel under the walls of the frontier-fortress of Villmanstrand, which was carried by assault.
It now became evident to La Chetardie that only a revolution would overthrow Osterman, and this he proposed to promote by elevating to the throne the tsesarevna Elizabeth, who hated the vice-chancellor because, though he owed everything to her father, he had systematically neglected her.
Osterman was therefore the first and the most illustrious victim of the coup d'etat of December 6, 1741.

Pyotr Shuvalov began his career as a page at the court of tsesarevna Elizabeth.
He was brought to tsesarevna's attention when he married her close friend and in-law, Mavra Shepeleva.
For his assistance in the enthronement of Elizabeth, he was promoted to the rank of chamberlain, then appointed senator and became a count in 1746.

It is a mistake to suppose, however, that La Chetardie took a leading part in the revolution which placed the daughter of Peter the Great on the Russian throne.
As a matter of fact, beyond lending the tsesarevna 2000 ducats, instead of the 15,000 she demanded of him, he took no part whatever in the actual coup d'etat which was as great a surprise to him as to every one else.
The merit and glory of that singular affair belong to Elizabeth alone.
