The debate on the change of names from its colonial and apartheid history cuts to the heart of transformation in the southern African country, more than a decade after its first democratic elections heralded the end of white minority rule.
But the proposed named change from Pretoria to Tshwane, one of the first African chiefs to settle in the area, has threatened to split the city along racial lines.
Pretoria was named after Andries Pretorius, who settled here with the so-called "Voortrekkers" (front trekkers) a vanguard of Boers who left the Cape colony with ox-wagons in the 1830s and the second group to live in the area.

African Languages - Meanings of place names in South Africa
Tshwane is, quite simply, the African name for the Apies** River which runs through the city, as well as the name used for the Pretoria area.
The most likely explanation put forth, however, is that the river was named in honour of Tshwane, the son of Chief Mushi, who settled in the area about a century before the arrival of the Voortrekkers in the early 1800s.
Although "Tshwane" resembles the Setswana word "Tshwene" (meaning baboon), it does not seem to be the case that "Tshwane" is derived from this.
