Tsing Yi Bridge is connected to Tsing Yi Road and Tsing Yi Heung Sze Wui Road on Tsing Yi Island, and Kwai Tsing Road and Tsing Kwai Highway in Kwai Chung.
Tsing Yi Bridge is formed by 5 levers, identical pairs of arms supported by stands, 18 metres (60 feet) above water, in the middle, with round-shaped caissons on the seabed.
Though later Tsing Yi North Bridge was built that alleviated the congestion a bit, and the bridge was closed once in 1989 (after the opening of the North bridge) for renovation, the safety of the bridge was still a major concern.

The government has announced plans for a new bridge linking Cheung Sha Wan to Tsing Yi.
This will eventually form part of "Route 8" from Sha Tin to the airport, the first section of which is already under construction, and the last part of which (Tsing Ma bridge to the airport) has been open for about 6 years.
There is already a perfectly good route from Sha Tin to the airport, especially since they built the Tsing Yi North Coastal Road (from Tsing Yi North to the Tsing Ma Bridge) a couple of years back, and it shouldn't take more than 35-40 minutes unless traffic is very bad.
