The Who, What, Where and When of Tsugaru(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
Tsugaru is the western half of Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost province of Japan's main island, Honshu.
Aomori is divided into three main regions: Nambu to the southeast, Shimokita -- the axehandle-shaped peninsula to the northeast -- and Tsugaru.
Conspicuously absent from Tsugaru are the influences of modern technological advances; as a result, Tsugaru seems stuck in a largely forgotten era of Japan's past.
Aomori is blessed with abundant nature and delightful water.
Jyappajiru is a typical Aomori wintertime hot pot made with codfish seasoned with miso and cooked at the table.
Aomori is surrounded by the sea on three sides, and so has many fresh seafood delicacies including scallops, squids, sea urchins, abalones, flatfish, sea squirts and sea cucumbers.
Tsugaru (津軽) is the northwestern peninsula of Aomori prefecture, at the northern tip of the Japanese main island of Honshu.
Traditionally one of the poorest and remotest areas of Japan, Tsugaru is best known as the birthplace of writer Osamu Dazai, who wrote the mordant travelogue Return to Tsugaru (ISBN 0870118412) about his travels around the peninsula, and for the Tsugaru-jamisen, a distinctive local version of the Japanese string instrument shamisen.
Tsugaru is separated from Hokkaido by the Tsugaru Strait.
His father was one of the most powerful politicians in Aomori prefecture council (later he became a member of the House of Representatives and of the Upper House).
Tsugaru Shamaisen (a Japanese traditional stringed instrument) originated in the severe climate of the Tsugaru district.
Tsugaru Shamisen Hall was opened in the spring of 2000.

Master Chikujo Ichikawa plays the Tsugaru Shamisen and is the only one left who knows the Art of the Bosama and the folklore of Tsugaru from 1603 to 1988.
At an early age, Chikujou Ichikawa was taken in charge by a "Bosama" (a blind musician) from Tsugaru (Aomori Prefecture) in Northern Japan.
For Japanese, the area represents "furusato," or the old country where life is simple and thoroughly "Japanese." Tsugaru folk songs have a romantic image of a bygone Japan and continue to exert influence on Japanese music and popular imagination.
