 Tsuguharu Foujita - Artist Biographies
Foujita had his first exhibition in Paris in 1917 and by 1924 he was one of the most important exhibitors at the Salon d' Automne.
Foujita died in Zurich at the age of eighty-one and was buried in the cathedral city of Rheims, where he had decorated a chapel after embracing Catholicism.
Foujita bridged the gap between Eastern and Western art in his narrative works, executed in a clear, flowing line and with paint applied in thin, very smooth layers of soft colors tending to grays, mauves, pale ochers, and fls.

Foujita was a good cook, I read; he was meticulously clean—he tried to teach Soutine to brush his teeth and to use a knife and a fork.
Foujita, it became clear, had been not only one of Montparnasse's most antic spirits (when he received his Legion of Honor medal he had to be dissuaded from using it as an ornament for his costume as a circus strongman for a Montparnasse ball), he had also been one of its greatest success stories.
For it was to La Coupole that Foujita had led his fellow artists on the night of its opening; and it was at La Coupole that both the party for Kiki's memoirs was held and a lunch given for the mourners on the day of Foujita's funeral.
