The Catholic church in Tsuwano is probably an offshoot of the cathedral in Yamaguchi which is dedicated to the memory of Saint Francis Xavier, who was a missionary in Japan 1549-50.
The philosopher Nishi Amane was born in Tsuwano.
A popular tourist destination, Tsuwano is served by the steam locomotive Yamaguchi-gō which runs once daily on weekends and on national holidays (except in the winter) from Shin Yamaguchi (formerly Ogori) station to Tsuwano and back.

The buses all stop in front of Tsuwano Station, at the northern end of town, seven minutes' walk from Tonomachi, the heart of the old samurai district.
Tsuwano's sights are somewhat spread out, so, if you intend to explore beyond Tomomachi, rent a bicycle from one of the many operations around the station, all charging ¥500 for two hours, ¥800 for the day.

Sagi-mai (White Heron Dance) is an ancient religious rite held at Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano Town at the west edge of Shimane Prefecture.
Originally, the rite passed from Kyoto to Yamaguchi was introduced to Tsuwano in the mid 16th century.

Son of Arima Yorinori, lord of Kurume Domain in Chikugo Province (present-day Fukuoka Prefecture), Kamei was born in 1825 in the domain's Edo residence.
He was declared the adopted son of Kamei Korekata, lord of Tsuwano Domain when he turned fifteen years old (in 1839), and was conferred the Lower Junior Fifth court rank and appointed Oki no Kami (Lord of the Oki Islands).

Eldest son of Imai Hideka, samurai retainer of the Tsuwano Domain in Iwami Province (in present-day Shimane Prefecture), Ōkuni was born in the Sakurada district of Edo, in the Tsuwano Domain lord's official capital residence.
He returned to Tsuwano in 1851 at the bequest of domainal lord Kamei Koremi (1825-1885) to teach at the local domainal academy (the Yōrōkan), where he educated Fukuba Yoshishizu (1831-1907) and other children of the lord's retainers.
However, Tsuwano domainal statesmen and scholars such as Kamei Koremi and Fukuba Yoshishizu inherited his legacy, becoming administrators in the reestablished Department of Divinities (Jingikan).

I started my journey from Osaka, and after a side trip to the buddhist retreat of Koyasan, I took the train across western (or is that southern?) Honshu to the northern tip of Kyushu and the city of Fukuoka (or Hakata, if you're looking at train station names - it's actually a twin city).
A small, quiet rural town famed for its carp filled roadside channels once used as an insurance against starvation should the town ever be held under siege from bandits in olden times.
This was recommended to me by the nice lady who ran the Photography Gallery in Tsuwano (on the right of the station as you come out).
