Shimane borders on Tottori Prefecture to the east, Yamaguchi Prefecture to the west, Hiroshima Prefecture to the south beyond the Chugoku Mountains and faces the Sea of Japan to the north.
Shimane's population is about 760 000 people with 150 000 people living in the Prefectural capital, Matsue City in eastern Shimane.
Shimane is located in the Sea of Japan's climatic zone, but the climate in the eastern part of the prefecture is closer to that of Hokuriku (the region west of Tokyo), characterized by heavy snowfall in winter.

 Association for Asia Research- Sagi-mai (White Heron Dance)
Sagi-mai (White Heron Dance) is an ancient religious rite held at Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano Town at the west edge of Shimane Prefecture.
Originally, the rite passed from Kyoto to Yamaguchi was introduced to Tsuwano in the mid 16th century.
Performed continuously since then, the Sagi-mai in Tsuwano is the only example of this rite that remains as it was hundreds of years ago.

About 45 minutes from Masuda is this lovely little mountain town called Tsuwano.
I liken it to Canmore because it's nestled in a valley, has only one decent street to walk down, and is a town people visit because all the good places are too far away.
