The valley was one of the earliest settled farming regions in Oregon in the (The decade from 1840 to 1849) 1840s.
The growth of agriculture in the valley eventually was limited in the middle (Click link for more info and facts about 20th century) 20th century by the need for ((medicine) cleaning a wound or body organ by flushing or washing out with water or a medicated solution) irrigation.
Much of the valley is now within the Portland (Click link for more info and facts about urban growth boundary) urban growth boundary, resulting in a suburban growth patterns that interspersed with remaining areas of orchards and farm fields.

In 1850 the Oregon Territory created the Portland-Tualatin Valley Plank Road Company to build a road through the Tualatin Hills connecting Portland with Beaverton.
According to Oregon historian Stewart Holbrook, the building of the plank road was the decisive event that allowed Portland to surpass its rival Oregon City for supremacy as the economic hub of the territory.
The communities along the Tualatin Valley Highway (the descendant of the old plank road), form a suburban corridor stretching west of Beaverton.

OR-8 didn't exist at the inception of the Oregon state route numbering system in 1932; the entire Tualatin Valley Highway, from Portland to Forest Grove to McMinnville was numbered OR-47.
When OR-6's highway, the Wilson River Highway, is completed 8 years later, OR-6 is removed from the Tualatin Valley Highway, and ODOT not only reinstates the OR-8 designation, but extends it along Gales Creek Rd. from Forest Grove to Gales Creek to meet up with OR-6.
A 1.35-mile portion of OR-8 that runs from OR-47 to the center of Forest Grove (called the Tualatin Valley Highway #29 Forest Grove Spur) was under state maintenance as of 2002, but was relinquished to Forest Grove maintenance around the same time the Nehalem Highway #102 (OR-47) was rerouted around Forest Grove.
