The Tuamotus are the largest chain of atolls in the world, spanning an area of the Pacific Ocean roughly the size of Western Europe.
The language spoken in the Tuamotus is, a collection of Polynesian dialects, except for in Puka-Puka and the Gambier Islands, where Puka-Pukan and Mangarevan are spoken, respectively.
Although geographically part of the Tuamotus, the Gambier Islands, at the southeastern extreme of the archipelago, are geologically and culturally distinct.

The islands/communes in the western part of the Tuamotus form the electoral circumscription of the Islands Tuamotu-West (circonscription électorale des Îles Tuamotu Ouest), a separate electoral district for the Assembly of French Polynesia, with the 5 communes Arutua, Fakarava, Manihi, Rangiroa and Takaroa in the western part of the Tuamotus.
The language spoken in the Tuamotus is Tuamotuan, a collection of Polynesian dialects, except for in Puka-Puka and the Gambier Islands, where Puka-Pukan and Mangarevan are spoken, respectively.

Tuamotus islands are the Pacific dream come true, and a sunny change from the rainstricken Marquesas.
An atoll in the Tuamotus is a lot larger than we enticipated, it can be 30 nautical miles long (about the same in miles) and 10 nautical miles wide, with several motus (islands) scattered along the reef which encircles the lagoon.
Variable currents, bad maps (the atolls can be up to 5 nautical miles off) and sudden storms have given the Tuamotus its nickname "the dangerous islands", and plenty of wrecks are scattered along the reefs.

Our progress through the Dangerous Archipelago (the old name for the Tuamotus) had proved that without a GPS – the electronic gizmo that gives your latitude and longitude from satellite fixes – life in the Tuamotus would not only be dangerous, it would be downright suicidal.
The Tuamotu atolls are invisible until you're about five miles away, since they have no mountainous islands in the Tuamotus as they do in the Gambiers, and before you know it you can be run aground on a coral reef and sinking in the South Pacific with no means of escape.

I made the pass dive once on scuba and several times just snorkeling while Don was able to dive the pass three more times in the company of Greg, Ruth and their crew Tom of the Hallberg Rassey 53 Bravo Charlie after they joined us in the anchorage.
Greg and Ruth have made a "career" of diving the Tuamotus, by commuting back and forth from Hawaii each year for the past four, and of it all this spot is their favorite.

During the winter the Tuamotus pick up lots of northwest swell sweeping down from the North Pacific, much the same as Hawaii picks up south swells during the summer from the South Pacific.
Tradewinds are usually moderate out of the East Southeast, which means clean offshore conditions for most of the northwest swell spots.
Tahiti and the Tuamotus also pick up Southern Hemisphere and various typhoon swells throughout the year as well, and The Cascade is always exploring many new reefs and passes to capture the best swells at the right place at the right time.
