Tuatara : Trading With the Enemy - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Tuatara creates a pretty original sound throughout (the only other band slightly comparable would maybe be Morphine), shifting through an ever changing variety of moods, from upbeat (the album opener "The Streets of New Delhi") to funky and groovy ("Smuggleros Cove"), and even melancholic ("Angel and the Ass").
Tuatara's second release, 1998's Trading With the Enemy, shows the band expanding their lineup (a total of 9 members) and focusing their sound even further.
Since Tuatara has rapidly grown between their first and second releases, it will be interesting to see where this intriguing, ad-hoc band winds up next.

Trading With the Enemy : Music by Tuatara, reviewed by Carey Dean Potash
Seen by many as a faux instrument, lumped somewhere in the bell family, and barely ahead of the triangle in the evolutionary chain of high school band instruments, the xylophone lacks the brashness of the electric guitar or the coolness of the drums.
A tuatara is a three-eyed reptile commonly found off of the islands of New Zealand (Webster's Dictionary).
Tuatara takes you around the world in 12 songs, making stops in the Orient with the Kitaro-like "Kyoto Song" and India with the haunting mysticism of "Wormwood." Each song contains several twists and turns, traipsing across different continents and different musical styles.

Tuatara's eclectic jams form organized chaos
Tuatara is also the backup band on his solo debut, "West," which Buck co-wrote and produced.
His melancholy was a great contrast to the high-voltage jams of Tuatara, as the intimacy of his voice was to their instrumental soundscapes.
Tuatara played the Gallery Theatre in support of their new instrumental, jazz-influenced album, "Breaking the Ethers." (l- r) Barrett Martin, Skerik, Justin Harwood, and Peter Buck.

 Tuatara: Cinemathique: Pitchfork Review
Actually, the wait was technically over around 1996 when this here band Tuatara formed and recorded their first album, but everyone pretty much forgot about them about two months after Breaking the Ethers was released straight to cut-out bin.
And counted among the lofty ranks of Tuatara is a fairly stellar group of individuals in terms of name recognition.
Tuatara offer a proficient exotica vibe, a decent 70s-style cop show car chase theme, a funky porn-style number, and even a bit of Gamelan.

R.E.M.: Life's Rich Pageant ---Ink Blot Magazine
In the wake of punk and new wave, the garage band sound of the Chronic Town EP, released in 1982, was R.E.M.'s first taste of critical worship, something that washed over into 1983 when the band's full length debut Murmur was universally considered the best album of the year.
The band's exodus to major label Warner Bros. allowed their unique sound to reach an even bigger audience, as 1989's Green continued garnering critical praise for the band while selling over a million records.

 Music Fast Horse rides in
Meanwhile, Buck says he and his Fast Horse partners have been speaking to many artists, but what’s certainly on the schedule is a live Tuatara disc and another album from Davis.
R.E.M.’s Peter Buck has been part of the indie-music landscape for more than two decades, ever since 1981, when his then-scrappy band from Athens, Georgia, put out their first 45, "Radio Free Europe." Longer, really, if you count his days as a record-store clerk and fan.
In interviews and conversations Buck hardly ever fails to mention a new band, rare singles, or a foreign sound he’s just fallen upon, often proselytizing with the same fervor white blues artists had for their African-American idols in the 1960s.
