When he arrived at Tubac, chosen because of the remains of a Spanish presidio here, he put in doors and window frames to replace the ones stolen, installed the mining machinery brought with him overland and commenced mining silver from mines in the Santa Rita Mountains and out near Arivaca.
But he stayed in Arizona and became known as the Father of Arizona because of his efforts to make it a territory, and he is the man who started the Arizona Pioneer Society.
Tubac is their winter home and the town of Toledo, Oregon is where they spend their summers.
