I’ve taken Simon Clarke’s geographically accurate map and overlaid it onto a NASA satellite image of London.
More useful is a map showing the walk lines between stations, and the way out map which indicates the most appropriate carriage to be in for speedy interchanges.

  A History of the London Tube Maps
Referring to the underground as the "tube" had been used in a number of earlier underground maps but the picture on the front cover of this map, sponsored by the London newspaper "Evening News", coveys the true concept of why it was known as the tube.
Despite the economies, the map still appears to be directed towards the public travelling for pleasure, as on the rear of the map there are some quaint and intriguing pictures of sights around London along with details of admission fees and opening hours.
Maps produced in the earlier years of the war were subjected to certain economies in the way of paper quality and style.

The Tube Map with Walklines tries to show the distance between stations in case you decide to walk it rather than catch a tube.
The Transport for London Real-time Tube Map attempts to show disruptions in lines in their usual tube color, disrupted stations are shown in red and the others are faded; if you click on a disrupted line or station, you get more information.
The London Bloggers Tube Map is a "directory of weblogs written by people who live or work in london, organised by the rather iconic London Tube map (and also the central london suburban rail network, docklands light railway and croydon tramlink)".

A good addition to this map is one that shows where the walkways between tube stations are.
You'll meet a guy who listens to tube trains from the road above with a large tube, the mad yellow Frog Buses, one minute they are on the road, the next in the river and a whole series of walks exploring the weird and wacky side of London.

One of the very few weaknesses of the standard tube map is that its distortion of geography (a very successful attempt to present the different stations and lines more clearly) sometimes means that it's not clear when the tube trip is unnecessary.

A special version of the London underground map is available called the "Tube access guide", which can help people in a wheelchair to plan a Tube journey avoiding stairs and escalators.
The new stock was called 1936 Tube Stock and was the prototype for over 1100 cars of 1938 Tube Stock.

There is the tube map as you've grown to know and love it, and there are spins offs - many spins off, that I've come across and collected, and are all nicely here for you in one place.
This map was made by Simon Clarke, who has his own website with other tube maps at www.simonclarke.org/lul/ and I believe that an updated version of the geographical map is being worked upon.
An artist called Simon Patterson was probably the first person to bastardise the tube map as we know and love it, when he reworked the map calling it 'The Great Bear'.

 Art 2003-2006: Tube Map with Walklines
This is a slightly altered map showing which stations are an arbitrary and as-the-crow-flies 500 metres apart from each other.
It doesn't look great yet, and definitely reduces the readability of the standard tube map at the moment, which isn't a good thing.
the same with the tube map faded out slightly, so you see the walklines more easily.

Proabably the reason the London Underground map is used Amberglow is in homage, (one of many coming out now), to Simon Patterson's The Great Bear in which the names of the tube stations were replaced with those of artists, philosophers, etc.
The plethora of London tube maps, including the Grandaddy "Great Bear" map (which is hung in the Tate) are collected at Tube Map Variations.
The Guardian tube map thing was a pretty pointless exercise, having been done better before.

The London Underground Map is famous for ignoring the real geography of the city in favour of a simplified diagram showing the lines and their intersections.
The map is so prevalent that Londoners and visitors now probably think of the city in terms of the tube map- referring to an area by the name of a station, or thinking of distances in the tube network as well as the real physical distance above ground.
There have been many maps that try to combine the real geography of the city with the simplicity of the official tube map.
