  Tom Heasley
Tubist Tom Heasley, composer of ambient, space and atmospheric music, will perform new works for tuba and didjeridu on Saturday, November 17, at 8:00
A classically-trained tubist with a varied musical background -- free jazz and a vast range of experimental work -- Heasley comes to Oberlin at the end of a three-month tour to promote his recently-released Hypnos CD, Where the Earth Meets the Sky.
Although it might be difficult for some to imagine the tuba capable of creating a beautifully restrained ambience, works such as "Ground Zero" from this new CD dispel that misconception immediately.

To A or not to A - Tuba and Euphonium Article from TubaNews.com
Tubist is spelled WITHOUT the "A!" It rings in my OWN head since this is a relatively new development on my part.
We discussed at some length the original justification for tubist - Piano-pianist, oboe-oboist, viola-violist and the like; the function of the "a" and actual pronunciation (implied or otherwise); links back to the Old Latin of the word tuba itself; all the while him withholding his expert albeit already decided opinion on the matter.
My suspicions confirmed, he further stated: "A tubist by definition within the English language is either an "expert in tubes" or "someone who plays [washtub] bass (in music)." Not TOO far off, at least, for those who will undoubtedly insist on clinging to the term.

Creative Impulse - Tuba and Euphonium Article from TubaNews.com
Don't misunderstand, this idea doesn't mean that you should abandon your initial goals, whether it be orchestral tubist, soloist, etc. The key here is about expanding our own opportunities, adding diversity to our own musical universe, and aiding in the evolution of the tuba.
It is of my opinion based on 25 years of playing in many different territories, that more creative efforts must be channeled to students, not only in group situations but on a more individual basis, if it is not already being done.
Tubists have an advantage because our instrument is relatively young and to my knowledge, hasn't reached the ears of the masses until now.
