Tubular Bells - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tubular Bells is a record album, written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield and orchestrated by David Bedford.
Tubular Bells can be seen as the first of a "series" of albums consisting of Tubular Bells II (1992), Tubular Bells III (1998) and The Millennium Bell (1999), leading some critics to suggest that Oldfield was like Quasimodo - "chained to the Bells".
Tubular Bells stayed in the British charts for over five years, reaching the number 1 spot after more than a year and taking there for one week the place of his second album, Hergest Ridge, thereby becoming one of only three artists in the UK to knock himself of the first spot.

Mike Oldfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oldfield's most famous work is Tubular Bells, an instrumental composition recorded in 1972 and launched on May 25, 1973 as the inaugural album of Richard Branson's Virgin Records label.
The second, The Millennium Bell, consisted of pastiches of a number of styles of music that represented various stages in history over the past millennium, and the work was performed live in Berlin for the city's millennium celebrations in 1999-2000.
Note: Although used in The Exorcist, Tubular Bells (1973) was not a soundtrack album.

DVD-Audio Review: Mike Oldfield - ‘Tubular Bells 2003’
‘Tubular Bells 2003’ is a re-recording of the original 1973 composition and not to be confused with a new work based on the theme, as was the case with ‘Tubular Bells II’, ‘Tubular Bells III’ and to a lesser extent ‘The Millennium Bell’.
Of the three, ‘Tubular Bells II’ is the king, the music is beautifully performed and the footage directed in a measured and engrossing way — watch out for the comic contribution of John Gordon Sinclair (of ‘Gregory’s Girl’, ‘Local Hero’ and ‘Fraggle Rock’ fame) during the ‘Altered State’ sequence, the 1992 incarnation of ‘Caveman’.
So, on to the summary… Musically, ‘Tubular Bells 2003’ is outstanding, superior even to the original; therefore as the two-channel track upon this DVD-Audio disc affords marginally higher fidelity (without crippling copy protection) than the CD alternative, it should be recommended for that element alone.
