  A brief early history of Tucker County West Virginia
Tucker County lies in the north-eastern part of the state and includes some of its most rugged and mountainous terrain.
Tucker County was formed in 1856 from the northern portion of Randolph County, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.
Tucker County has always been primarily an agricultural area, but the large reserves of coal, limestone, shale and timber have encouraged industrial development.

Tucker County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on March 7, 1856 from parts of Randolph County.
West Virginia's Potomac Highlands was inhabited by the Tuscarora.
The residents of Tucker County's were fairly evenly divided during the Civil War, with most of the residents in the St. George area strongly in favor of the Confederacy, and most of the residents in the Dry Fork area strongly in favor of the Union.

According to the biography of Abe Bonnifield, a prominent man in the early history of the county, a committee of fifteen or twenty persons were chosen to select a site for a courthouse for the contemplated new county.
The new county was christened Tucker and the Seat of Justice St. George.
Harrison county was formed in 1784 from Monongalia and Monongalia was formed in 1776 from the West Augusta district.

Henry St. George Tucker was born in 1780 in Chesterfield County, Virginia and followed in the path of his father, St. George Tucker.
He served as a member of the Virginia house and senate and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served from 1815 to 1819.
Tucker is buried at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia.

It is found from the map that almost all the area which may be suitable as the northern goshawk’s nesting habitat is concentrated in the eastern half of the County; the western half portion of the County endowing a few small fragmented patches.
Even though the entire County is forested and located at high elevation, about one third portion of its total area (and not the whole) is suitable to satisfy basic habitat requirements of this hawk, especially for nesting.

He later represented Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives (1815-1819), served as a superior court judge (1824-1831), President of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals (1831-1841), and Dean of the faculty at the University of Virginia (1841-1845).
Tragedy struck the county's early settlers in April 1781 when three of its leading citizens, John Minear, Daniel Cameron and Jacob Cooper, were killed by Indians as they returned to their homes from Clarksburg to obtain legal patents for their lands.
The act creating the county specified that the county court was to be held on the lands of Enoch Minear on the east side of Cheat River, and was to be called Saint George (the area had been known as Westernford) in honor of Henry Saint George Tucker, Jr.

The wealth of Tucker County was first discovered by surveyors for Lord Fairfax in 1746.
One of the first lumber towns in West Virginia, Davis soon earned the nickname "Stump-town." It was said that one could travel through town by stepping from stump to stump.
In 1934 the West Virginia State Park Commission leased 446 acres surrounding what was known as "The Falls of the Blackwater," the same area explored by David Hunter Strother during the first fishing expedition in 1851.

And while Tucker County, population 7,000, is better known for its Canaan Valley ski resorts, some residents consider the wind farm a valuable tourist attraction.
To build the first proposed wind farm in West Virginia, the developers of the Mountaineer wind farm had to get approval from the Public Service Commission, which regulates public utilities in the state, and two public forums were held to hear residents' opinions.
