Tukino doesn't suffer from the crowds of larger ski fields, and the club believes that this is a big drawcard for people who want a bit more personal space and room to move with safety on the slopes.
Tukino ski field is hoping to attract families, social groups such as 4WD clubs and school groups with the packages.
Tukino ski field has two tows, 250 vertical metres and 19 hectares of skiable area, mostly rated beginner or intermediate, but it also has a bit of a wild side with great off-piste powder skiing and boarding for the more adventurous.

In 1864 Horonuku gathered a taua (war party) of 200 men and journeyed to the Waikato to aid his relatives in their fight against the Pakeha.
Horonuku died on 30 July 1888 and was succeeded as paramount chief by his son, Tureiti (Te Heuheu Tukino V), who later became a member of the Legislative Council.
On his death in 1921 he was succeeded by his son, Hoani (Te Heuheu Tukino VI).

Te Heuheu Tukino IV was the son of Te Heuheu Tukino II, called Mananui (?-1846) and his second wife, Te Mare.
In May 1846 Mananui and a number of his eight wives and children were killed in a landslide at Te Rapa, Waihi on the southern shores of LakeTaupo.
His twenty two year old son Patatai, who had spent most of his childhood with Waikato relatives, was not living at Te Rapa at the time of the disaster.

The Rangipo Desert is on the unfashionable eastern side of the mountain, the only access to the mountain being the rough Tukino Track.
This is at 5000 feet up on the side of the mountain, five miles up Tukino Track from the Desert Road.
The first four miles of the track is, allegedly, suitable for cars (but beware of loose sand in stream crossings).

On Mananui's death in May 1846, Iwikau arranged the funeral rites, preparatory to having his brother's body exhumed for reburial on the slopes of Tongariro.
Iwikau was chosen paramount chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa because of his family ties with the powerful Waikatos and with Ngati Maniapoto, and also because Horonuku (Te Heuheu Tukino IV) was too inexperienced to accept the responsibility.
