Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi (born in 1952 in Highfield, Harare) is a Zimbabwean musician, one of the longest-lasting popular performers from that country.
Tuku's influence is profound; his style is even known as Tuku music, sometimes, because he has had such a distinct effect on Zimbabwean music.
Tuku has also ventured into film, playing the lead in Jit and Neria, for which he arranged the soundtrack, as well as on several documentaries on Zimbabwean music.

Tuku has, in fact been so innovative in his music that it is now referred to as Tuku Music and quite distinct from any other Zimbabwean style.
Tuku has ventured into the world of film and Drama, participating in several documentaries on Zimbabwean music in the 80's, however it was not until 1990 that he found film success playing the lead role in the Zimbabwean film "JIT", which was also released in Denmark, France, and the UK.

Tuku has, in fact, been so innovative in these various fields that his music is now widely referred to as ‘Tuku Music’ being quite distinct from any other Zimbabwean style.
Tuku and the Black Spirits enjoyed their first visit to Australia to perform at the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) followed by Womadelaide in Adelaide where the group performed to an audience of some 15000 people on 18 February 2001.
Tuku was featured in TIME AFRICA magazine in April 2003 in an article entitled “The People’s Voice” and becomes the first African musician ever to feature on the front cover of the magazine.

Oliver Mtukudzi - "Tuku", as he is known to his growing legion of fans, and his band The Black Spirits, toured North America in 1999 as part of Africa Fete appearing at many of the premier festivals and stages across the continent.
Tuku followed the success of JIT with the role of the title character’s brother in Zimbabwe's second feature film, Neria, for which he also wrote and arranged the soundtrack.

Tuku is currently in the studio producing an album for the Pakare Paye Arts Ensemble (PPAE), a nine piece band of young talented individuals whom he brought together after conducting auditions at the Pakare Paye Art Centre.

Tuku has been heavily influenced by chimurenga, the genre pioneered by Mapfumo that is inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano).
However chimurenga is just one of many styles performed by Tuku, as his music also incorporates pop influences, South African mbaqanga, the energetic Zimbabwean pop style JIT, or the traditional kateke drumming of his clan, the Korekore.
