The airport was built to replace the nearby, outdated Essendon Airport, which did not have runways or terminals able to accommodate large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 which began to appear in the late 1960s.
Melbourne airport has experienced a number of disadvantages recently including: British Airways withdrawl from Melbourne in March 2006, Qatar Airways being denied permission to commence flights to Melbourne by the federal government and Austrian Airlines recent announcement that it is to end all flights to Australia in March 2007, including Melbourne.
A number of Australian airports were privatised in 1997 including Melbourne Airport which was leased to the Australia Pacific Airports Corporation, a company largely owned by a group of infrastructure investment funds, for a period of fifty years.

Tullamarine's residential area is contained in a circular loop of the Moonee Ponds Creek, and its western boundary is the Melbourne Airport, originally called the Tullamarine Airport.
Originally Tullamarine extended westwards to the Organ Pipes National Park, and the nearby area bounded by the Maribyrnong River, Jacksons Creek and Deep Creek was called Tullamarine Island because of the difficulties faced by inhabitants in getting across the watercourses during wet weather.
Tullamarine had census populations of 82 (1891), 190 (1921) and 204 (1947).

Melbourne Tullamarine is a reasonable airport on most fronts but does suffer in luggage delays, ineffecient immigration processes and poor design of pedestrian walk ways from the short term car park.
The airport was okay (been using this airport for almost 3 years), but the strange things was only two immigration counter was open for non-Australian passports.
Also the Airports overseas does have capabilities to process those cards prior to landing at MEL however there is no excuse for bad treatment to the newly arrivals.

I think Sydney airport provides a separate parking area for bikes close to the terminal, however I cant seem to find any info on Tulla.
I couldn't find any info on their website specific to bikes and a fine for parking on the footpath would work out to be one expensive parking ticket...
I've ridden my bike to the airport, left it in the car rental area (there are designated bike parking spaces there) and flown to Sydney for the weekend.
