A tulwar is a type of saber from Mughal India dating back to at least the 17th century.
However the blade of a tulwar is wider in the ricasso than a shamshir, and will taper less to the point.
Due to it's popularity in India the tulwar was found in 19th century Afghanistan, Nepal, Mysore.

Both are curved, but the main differences are that the shamshir has a very pronounced, extreme curve, and the tulwar usually has a disc pommel.
The shamshir is for cutting; the tulwar is for clever use of both the point and the edge in a fight.
The point of having a curve in a tulwar or a kirpan is to enable you to perform "draw cuts".

A tulwar question - Sword Forum International
I can't answer this for all tulwar, but of the ones I've handled, the hilt is a hollow shell into which the blade tang, which is pretty short on most I've seen, is in fact glued in with a sort of pitch type adhesive.
I've had the opportunity to observe a couple of old broken tulwar and the tang on those was maybe 2 or 3 inches long.
I happen to know that they glue the handles on in an apperantly historical fashion so my main concern is with the handle comeing loose or comeing off competely due to a shoddy glue being used.

If the Tulwar were going to survive, every healthy female had to bear children.
They did not mean to turn their children away from enjoyment of the world, but so much had been lost; they had become afraid; and fear is the end of piety.
Most were similar to ones in Tulwar; but she found a few new kinds, including one she knew as a fossil.

What set Tulwar aparts from the other middle east curved swords was its hilt design that it always features a disc pommel.
Indian Tulwar were often made by Wootz (the true Damascus steel) or European imported steel.
The hilt of Tulwar features a disc pommel, a knuckle bar and a short cross guard that provides the weapon wielding hand a very strong protection from all angles.

On tulwar hilt vs khanda hilt, AFAIK the "spike" (it's really a handle for left hand flips and long ones can be used in blocks though I don't know if that's traditional) is not the only difference, and like some others is not universal (ie some tulwars do have a long "spike".).
There is the grip, curved and cylindrical on the firangi, straight and swelled on the tulwar (yes, another nonuniversal).
There is the flat plate quard, with its boatlike upward curve that seems greater than the cupping affect of a tulwar's quillons, and the quillons under the plate, with their resemblance to the ganga of kris sundang (and often with baca like features).

Just as Jens has noted spot on, your tulwar is a very nice example of fighting tulwar on latter 19th to very early 20th century, and Rajasthan quite likely for manufacture.
I once owned a pair of solid metal tulwars made for native cavalry troopers in British Raj units, that were manufactured by 'Mole', the well established Birmingham maker later incorporated into the famed Wilkinson.
It is well known that British native cavalry regiment contingents favored the tulwar, especially of course the Sikh and Rajput warriors that comprised considerably the ranks.

For years, I've been mostly ignoring tulwar since the majority of them for sale in the US are flimsy 1800's and 1900's "Sepoy" tulwar, mass produced as inexpensive weaponry by native workers in colonial factories.
The blade is quite robust, 1/4" thick at the base of the spine, and it tapers down to 1/16" at the false edge (also an unusual feature in tulwar).
This sword has seen some action with one bad chip at the striking "sweet spot", but otherwise is in good shape for it's age (and usefulness!).

I think I may have the answer.....we are used to 'standard' sword 'play' and as such see the hilt as a problem.
The small hilt and large pommel ensure the sword is not 'lost' in the frenzy of battle.
