Tumulus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tumulus (plural tumuli or tumuluses) is a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave or graves.
Tumuli are also known as barrows, burial mounds or kurgans and can be found throughout much of the world.
During the 19th century in England the excavation of tumuli was a popular pastime amongst the educated and wealthy middle classes who became known as "barrow-diggers".

Certain types of features, such as tumuli, lava rises and lava rise pits, are indicators of flow inflation or endogenous growth of a lava flow.
Tumuli in particular have been identified as possible indicators of tube location, indicating that their distribution on the surface of a lava flow is a junction of the internal pathways of lava present during flow emplacement.
Since tumuli form by the injection of lava beneath a crust, the distribution of tumuli on a flow should represent the distribution of thermally preferred pathways beneath the surface of the crust.

As to the four tumuli added to those discovered by Thompson by the METU Phrygian Necropolis Project, these include the twin hills north of the way from the Eskişehir highway to the Çiftlik centre and the one, north of the İstanbul highway at the junction of the road leading to the Zoo inside the Çiftlik.
The skirt of the only example among the Phrygian tumuli in Ankara which have survived in magnificence and unsurveyed was recently devastated during an extension work on the Konya highway for the construction of a station building within the scope of the Ankara Underground Project.
A chronology may be proposed for the four tumuli excavated by METU and for those previously excavated in Ankara on the basis of a comparative study of findings with those recovered from the Gordion tumuli.
