I have no way of knowing how smart she is, although sometimes I wish she was more articulate and combative in defending herself.
I mean, after all the "oh, the humanity" rhetoric, when it came to where her own people would have to pay up, the issue morphed to "oh, the humanity, except the Samoans".

Searching for Charlie the Tuna to post in this thread reminded me of the 1985 Tunagate scandal, one of the reasons why I still won't eat Starkist tuna.
It ranks as one of the top 10 Canadian political scandals on the CBC list above, but is also included on wikipedia's more complete list.
The tunagate scandal was when i learned that there was such a job as a canned tuna fish inspector.

For my part, I think the PCs died when that backstabbing bastard MacKay merged the PC with the Alliance and that whatever was good about the PCs was discarded.
I don't see the two TunaGates as being linked by anything more than the natural tendency of a conservative government to want to cut corners on food safety.
I seem to recall Angloman using that first Tunagate to take one of a series of demolition-style punches at the Mulro-errrr-Power Chin era.

What came next was "Tunagate" when the Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, John Fraser, overruled the Fisheries Inspectors verdict that some spoiled tuna as "not fit for human consumption or even fit for cat food." (See link).
This possibly tainted tuna was allowed to be shipped to stores, however, and it was removed from store shelves only after the scandal hit the airwaves.

The current scandal is that our foreign minister, Peter Mackay (the one rumoured to have tried to turn a meeting with Condi into a date), referred to his ex-girlfriend, Belinda Stronich (whose billionaire father built Canadaville for Katrina survivors and is herself an MP) as a dog, in the House of Commons.
