It is situated in the Central Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes.
During the night and morning of July 15th, 2006 constant tremors, explosions, ash emissions and rocks falls, put the population in Pelileo, Baños, Penipe, and other counties of the Provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua in alert.

Jatun Yaurikuna is the name of a group of young Salacan's, ages from 15 to 20 years who got together in August of 2005 and started a cultural dance group to keep alive the folkloric music and dances of their people.
The members of the group, Jatun Yaurikuna, live in the small town of Salasaca which is located 14 KM from Ambato, on the highway to Baños, in the Canton of Pelileo, Province of Tungurahua.
Salasaca is an indigenous community of 12,000 inhabitants and situated on the side of the Tungurahua volcano.

According to the Ecuadorian Red Cross, in the aftermath of the eruption, 280 persons from Cusúa, Bilbao, San Juan, and Pillate in Tungurahua province were evacuated and placed in four temporary shelters in Pelileo.
According to the Civil Defense in the province of Chimborazo approximately 739 families had to be evacuated and placed in two shelters in Penipe on 14 July.

The Tungurahua volcano is situated 180 Kilometers from Quito at 5,020 meters above sea level.
Since early August its seismic activity has been on the increase (the alert level has been at yellow - volcano is restless, eruption may occur - since October 2000).The US Geological Survey’s Volcano Hazards Program reports that ongoing eruptions are sending steam-and-ash clouds to 7.5-11.6 km above sea level.
On 14 August the President of Ecuador declared the state of emergency in the seven communities most threatened by the volcano: Quero, Cevallos, Mocha, Pelileo and Tisaleo in the Tungurahua Province and Penipe and Guano in the Chimborazo Province.
