He showed that the relations between the nervous system, the notochord and the alimentary canal are the same in the two forms, and have been brought about by a very similar course of embryonic development.
ancestors of the Tunicata (Urochorda), Amphioxus (Cephalochorda) and the Vertebrata.
The ancestral Tunicata were probably freeswimming forms, not very unlike the existing Appendiculariidae, and are represented in the life-history of nearly all sections of the Tunicata by the tailed larval stage.

 Lander University | Botryllus
Tunicata is traditionally divided into Ascidiacea (the benthic sea squirts in three taxa; Aplousobranchia, Phlebobranchia, and Stolidobranchia), Thaliacea (the pelagic salps), and Appendicularia (the pelagic larvaceans).
Recent molecular evidence and reevaluation of morphological evidence, however, suggests that Ascidiacea is paraphyletic and Tunicata should be reorganized into three different higher taxa (Fig 29-32).
Ascidiacea is usually taken as representative of Tunicata, at least for the purposes of introductory laboratory exercises.

The mitochondrial gene arrangement of the distantly related Katharina tunicata [28] (the only sampled representative of the Polyplacophora, an early diverging class of the Mollusca) differs from that of another studied cephalopod, Octopus vulgaris [29], by only the inversion of trnP and a transposition of trnD, and differs from that of N.
tunicata mtDNAs each have sharp boundaries in base compositional bias that correspond so precisely to shifts in transcriptional orientation, it appears that lesions in the displaced strand during transcription are an important contribution.
tunicata in which strand is leading during replication could account for their differing skew patterns.

The Ascidiacea constitute a class of the subphylum Tunicata or Urochordata, which are chordate animals related to the vertebrates.
Together with the subphylum Cephalochordata (with the Amphioxus, Branchiostoma lanceolatum), the Tunicata form the phylum Chordata.

Subsequently Milne Edwards (1843) added the Bryozoa to the Tunicata in the Class Molluscoidea; then Hancock (1850) added Brachiopoda to the Bryozoa and Tunicata in the Molluscoidea; and finally Huxley (1851) recognised the Tunicata (ascidians, salps, doliolids and Appendicularia) as a distinct phylogenetic entity separate from Mollusca, Bryozoa and Brachiopoda.
Kowalewsky (1866) recognised a chordate affinity in the notochord -like cells in the larval tail and the group Tunicata was regarded as a subphylum of the Chordata.
