  Tunne Kelam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tunne Kelam (born 10 July 1936 in Taheva, Estonia) is an Estonian politician and Member of the European Parliament for the Pro Patria Union (Estonia), part of the European People's Party.
Tunne Kelam was also the last Chairman of the Estonian National Independence Party (1993-1995) and lead his party into merger with the National Alliance "Pro Patria" which resulted in creation of the Pro Patria Union (Estonia).
Tunne Kelam is an honorary citizen of the State of Maryland (USA) since 1991.

From 1997 to 2003 Kelam was the Chairman of the European Affairs Committee in the Riigikogu and the Co-Chairman of the Estonian-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Tunne Kelam was elected in June to be one of six representatives from Estonia to the European Parliament where he belongs to the largest political group, the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats.
Kelam’s efforts aimed at restoring his homeland to its rightful place in the international community of nations began with the 1972 appeal to the United Nations and culminated 32 years later with his representing Estonia as a MEP in the world’s largest democratic parliament.

According to the press service of the European Parliament, Kelam cited his German colleague, Milan Horacek, who had been following the judicial proceedings against YUKOS top management since last May. Horacek had come to the conclusion that the proceedings were conducted in violation of the regulations and could not guarantee a fair trial.
Kelam reminded them that "Khodorkovsky and Lebedev have been sent to serve their sentences thousands of kilometers away from their homes." Kelam stated that the sentences were also in violation of Russian regulations that provide for convicted citizens to serve their sentences in the detention centers that are closest to their homes.

On 12 May, the European Parliament adopted a joint resolution on the breaches of human rights and democracy in the Mari Republic (Mari El) of the Russian Federation.
Co-signed by Kelam, with Hungarian MEP Gyorgy Schopflin and German Bernd Posselt, the resolution was denounced by Mari Republic authorities.
In its resolution, the European Parliament calls on Russian local and federal authorities "to respect their obligations under international law, and to take adequate steps to facilitate the practical implementation of the provisions of the State Constitution and other legislation relating to the maintenance and development of minority languages and cultures".
