  Tuonela Summary
TUONELA, which means "the abode," is the mythical place of sojourn for the deceased in the religious traditions among Finns, Karelians, Ingrians and speakers of many other Finnish-related languages.
Tuonela is the realm of the dead or the Underworld in Finnish mythology, similar to Hades in Greek mythology.

 Amorphis-Tuonela
Tuonela is made up of shorter and more straightforward compositions, which sees the members of Amorphis concentrating their efforts into writing strong songs instead of experimentation.
On Tuonela, the keyboards are used mainly as atmospheric enhancement rather than a lead instrumental and at times are barely noticeable.
That's not to say that there are no harsh vocals on Tuonela, just that they are few and far between, only taking a leading role in "Greed", which sees Pasi handling the Death vocals with as much ease as he does his clean singing.

Tuonela is a slow song but too emotional thanks to the great vocal performance.
Another good songs from Tuonela: Divinity, the single (even though is not the best song from the album); and Shining is one of the songs with an “old rock” style, just as Rusty Moon, but this includes some traditional flute melodies that will make you remember osme kind of jazz, new age, I don’t know.
Upon hearing Tuonela for the first time, I was completely shocked at how great Tuonela is. I was slightly disappointed with Amorphis "Am Universum" and never gave this a listen until awhile ago and was pleased how it leaned more in Elegy's direction.

 Lemminkäinen
During the 1890s Lemminkäinen in Tuonela was played as the second movement of the suite, but later Sibelius decided to replace it with The Swan of Tuonela.
The Swan of Tuonela is a splendid example of dark orchestration and of Sibelius's way of substituting for the pedal of the piano by means of skilful orchestration.
Sibelius omits the flutes, clarinets and trumpets and raises the strings to the high register, thus leaving room for a long and extremely fine cor anglais solo, which is supported by responses from the cello.

 AMORPHIS - Tuonela/Am universam
Harder and heavier than the last album, Tuonela is possibly the band's best album so far, and certainly one which should also win them some new fans.
While much of "Am Universum" is in fact a continuation of "Tuonela," which was a continuation of "Elegy" and more specifically the progressive nature of the "My Kantele" EP, it falls short not of expectation but of the "groundbreaking" acclaim that's been synonymous with their ongoing development.
That album was a perfect balance of strength and harmony with enough emotive and traditional characteristics to rank as the true class of an ever broadening genre of music they stood at the forefront of for so long.

According to Kalevala (the finnish national epos, as it is described), Tuonela is the underworld.
As far as the music is concerned, "Tuonela"'s greatest difference to "Elegy" is that there is no keyboard player.
The atmosphere is not at all melancholic, rather joyful and, although the music's relationship with heavy metal is not particularly strong, this album can be appreciated by those who enjoy the mixture of rock with folk and traditional elements.

Those of you who haven't heard 'Tuonela' yet will be glad to know that this is still the case.
Although what they have given us is clearly heavy metal music, often structured around distorted guitars, beautiful solos, hard-hitting drum rhythms and the occasional welcome appearance of magnificent death metal vocals, they have elaborated on the oriental and northern European folk elements and further pushed the progressive component of their style.
What makes me even more keenly fond of them though is their exceptional ability to orchestrate so well under what must be a veritable siege from all these ideas in their heads.

The folk motifs on "Weeper on the Shore", the title track, and the instrumental piece "Relief" have also mined the band's next release Tuonela, which is basically a testimony to folk rock with Koskinen doing all clean vocals except one song.
Tuonela saw the band abandoning its death-metal roots and moving towards a spacey, 70's prog-rock sound, incorporating saxophones and flutes into their already eclectic sound.
While Tuonela was heavily folk-tinged, their last one, Far from the Sun displays their more modern and guitar-driven updated sound.

Although the composer thought "Finlandia" (his most popular work) was overrated and obscured his reputation as a symphonist, it's without doubt a phenomenal work.
Lesser known are his tone poems based on the mythic scenes from the Finnish Kalevala: "The Swan of Tuonela" and "Tapiola".
Unlike "Finlandia" and his romantically-inspired Violin Concerto, these pieces are harmonically sparse, perhaps intended to reflect the starkly beautiful, monochrome Finnish landscape.
