BBC - History - Cook, Tupaia and Maori   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Tupaia, the legendary leader of the Polynesian island of Raitea, was brought to meet Captain Cook during the early part of his first voyage, while the Endeavour was moored near Tahiti.
For his part, Tupaia was eager to embark on a journey of exploration to new places and, like his ancestors before him, to learn about new modes of adaptation and survival.
Tupaia, although focused on the personal and community benefits he might acquire through the voyage, had talents and skills of leadership that were soon made obvious as the journey progressed, not only in navigation, but also, on arrival in New Zealand, in mediating between the Maori and members of Cook's crew.

Tupaia told Cook of exploration, discovery, and migration to rival the accounts of Europe’s boldest adventurers, but with a striking difference: The Polynesians staked their claims across the open sea instead of land.
Tupaia’s map, redrawn by Cook and later by other members of the crew, places seventy-five islands in the Polynesians’ ocean realm, with Tahiti at the center.
Tupaia died on the voyage back to England and Cook was killed in Hawaii a few years later.

 Comparative Placentation
Similarities in tarsal morphology suggest that tupaias, together with primates and bats, originated from the 'archontan stock' of placental mammals which first developed the capability of living in trees (Szalay and Drawhorn, 1980; Adkins and Honeycott, 1991).
Hormonal control of pregnancy shows striking similarities between tupaias and humans (Schwaier et al., 1976; Elger and Hasan, 1984, unpublished): The course of serum progesterone levels in early (days 12 to 15 p.c.) and late pregnancy (days 35 to 40 p.c.) suggests a luteo-placental shift of progesterone secretion around day 20 post conception.

Sadly, Cook was never able to learn and document Tupaia's navigational techniques, for Tupaia, and many of Cook's crew, died of malaria in the Dutch East Indies.

Some zoologists classify tree shrews as primates because of their relatively large brains, eyes in orbits surrounded by bone, and other features; others classify them with shrews and moles as insectivores.
