The Tupolev Tu-144 (NATO reporting name: Charger) was the first supersonic transport aircraft (SST), constructed under the direction of the Soviet Tupolev design bureau headed by Alexei Tupolev (1925–2001).
Moreover, the Tupolev design bureau had significant experience building delta-shaped aircraft, and TsAGI, of which Andrei Tupolev was a graduate, had developed extensive data about such designs.
Lacking the sophisticated wing, Tupolev instead relied on a simple but practical device: a small retractable canard surface on either side of the aircraft, close to the nose, to manoeuvre at low speeds.

 Tupolev Tu-28 at AllExperts
The Tupolev Tu-28 (NATO reporting name 'Fiddler') was developed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s as a long-range interceptor aircraft.
In 1955 the PVO issued a specification for a long-range interceptor aircraft to defend the vast territory of the Soviet Union, which was so extensive that even with a far richer economy it would have been impossible to provide comprehensive land-based air defense.
To provide the necessary range and ability to carry a powerful radar and air-to-air missiles, Tupolev developed an aircraft similar to the Tu-105 (Tu-22) bomber.

Tupolev's TU-144, the world's first giant supersonic transporter and the true marvel of aeronautical engineering still remains unsurpassed today, some 30 years after its maiden flight.
Although well-structured points are made regarding the revolutionary milestones achieved by Tupolev, such as the variable geometry canard winglets and nose-cone or the delta wing design, which ushered in the 3+ Mach epoch, they are lost on the average reader.
Tupolev is also the constructor of most of Russia's commercial jets and the book is therefore useful for anyone interested in civil aviation.

You'll recall that the Tu-126 followed the same path as the E-3 Sentry - the commercial Boeing 707 airframe was fitted with a flying saucer in close formation to fulfill the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) mission.
