The Tupolev design bureau was instructed by the government of the Soviet Union to develop an airliner with intercontinental range based on the Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber.
During the design process of the Tu-114, the Tupolev OKB decided to convert three disbanded military Tu-95s.
The Tupolev Tu-114 Rossiya (NATO reporting name Cleat) is a turboprop powered medium-range airliner designed by the Tupolev design bureau.

After consideration of Tupolev's proposals, on 11 July 1951 the government officially approved the development of the "95" aircraft: Two versions were built, one with eight TV-2F engines coupled through the reduction gearbox in four pusher-tractor tandem pairs, and a second version with four TV-12 engines.
BEAR F - TU-142 / TU-142M -- The Tupolev Tu-142 'Bear' is the final maritime version of an aircraft originally introduced as a strategic bomber in the early 1950s.
However, KB Tupolev did not support the development of a bomber with turbojet engines, believing that the proposed AM-3 jet engines would not provide for the required range of more than 10,000 km.

The Tupolev Tu-16 Badger was originally developed as a medium bomber to complement the Myasishchev M-4 Bison and Tupolev Tu-95 Bear and the first prototype flew in 1952.
On 25 May 68 Badger-F flew very low over the USN carrier USS Essex - after the last pass, the aircraft appeared to stall and crashed into the sea.

For political reasons Andrey Nikolayevich Tupolev presented the project as the Tu-22M; this was a trick intended to fool the Soviet government into thinking a considerable increase in capabilities could be obtained by a simple modification of the existing Tu-22.
This, according to Tupolev, was easier and cheaper than the "clean sheet of paper" designs proposed by the rival Sukhoi and Myasischchev bureaux.
In 1964 the Tupolev Design Bureau began development of a twin-engined medium bomber intended as a replacement for the Tu-22 supersonic bomber which had entered service in the early 1960s.
