Depression is a pervasive and impairing illness that affects both women and men, but women experience depression at roughly twice the rate of men.
At one time, it was commonly thought that women were particularly vulnerable to depression when their children left home and they were confronted with "empty nest syndrome" and experienced a profound loss of purpose and identity.
