turbine - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about turbine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Steam turbines are used to drive generators in power stations and ships' propellers; water turbines spin the generators in hydroelectric power plants; and gas turbines (as jet engines; see jet propulsion) power most aircraft and drive machines in industry.
Impulse turbines work on the same principle as the water wheel and consist of sets of buckets arranged around the edge of a wheel; reaction turbines look much like propellers and are fully immersed in the water.
In a gas turbine a compressed mixture of air and gas, or vaporized fuel, is ignited, and the hot gases produced expand through the turbine blades, spinning the rotor.

Electricity Generation Using Small Wind Turbines At Your Home Or Farm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Small wind turbines, (see Figure 1), which are generally defined as producing no more than 100 kW of electricity, are designed to be installed at homes, farms and small businesses either as a source of backup electricity, or to offset use of utility power and reduce electricity bills.
The actual power production from a wind turbine will be influenced by many other factors, such as: the efficiency that the wind turbine is able to extract energy from the wind; the elevation at which the turbine is located; and other design characteristics of the wind turbine.
Large turbines turbine blades rotate in the range of at 50-15 rpm at constant speed, although an increasing number of machines operate at a variable speed.

Community Wind: The Third Way by Paul Gipe
Wind turbines, for example, can be placed in one's backyard, near a factory, on a farm, at a harbor, within cities as in Toronto, or even offshore from cities as near Copenhagen.
This modularity enables placing wind turbines nearer the load than possible with large, centralized power plants, providing the resiliency necessary for stable electricity networks that was identified twenty years ago by Amory and Hunter Lovins in their book Brittle Power.
The turbines' production would then be used to offset the retail rate on coop members' electricity bills in proportion to the amount of investment each had in the turbine.
