  TDI FAQ
Turbo lag with the VW TDI engine is on the order of 0.25 second, which is not noticeable to the driver.
Injection timing is varied by rotating the cam profile that the plunger is pressed against; this is done by a small hydraulic cylinder controlled by a solenoid valve located on the bottom of the injection pump housing.
Within the distributor-type injection pump is a small electric motor which positions the fuel cutoff sleeve around the injection plunger; this changes the effective stroke of the plunger and thus varies the amount of fuel being injected.

Turbocharged Direct Injection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Turbo Direct Injection ('TDI) is the technology used for modern Diesel engines produced by Volkswagen Group, and is widely used in passenger cars produced by the company (especially those sold in Europe).
The engine uses direct injection where a fuel injector sprays directly into the engine cylinder rather than the pre-combustion chamber prevalent in older diesels which used indirect injection.
The reduced material volume of the direct injection diesel engine reduces heat losses and thereby increases engine efficiency, at the expense of increased combustion noise.

New Ecotec 2.0L Direct Injection Turbo Engine
Gasoline direct injection differs from the fuel delivery process of a conventional engine by delivering fuel directly into the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with air drawn into the chamber.
Direct injection is a continuation of the evolutionary process of moving the fuel introduction point closer to the combustion location to improve control.
Direct injection requires higher fuel pressure than conventional fuel-injected engines, and an engine-driven high-pressure fuel pump is used to supply up to 2,250 psi of pressure.

With the common rail, the injection point and the injection quantity can be adjusted considerably more accurately to the needs of the engine.
Advanced injection is critical for the smooth running characteristics of the direct injection diesel engine.

Gasoline direct injection differs from the fuel delivery process of a conventional engine by delivering fuel directly into the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with air drawn in to the chamber.
Direct injection requires higher fuel pressure than conventional fuel injected engines and an engine-driven high-pressure fuel pump is used to supply up to 1,276 psi (150 bar) of pressure.
Also, direct injection permits higher a compression ratio in the engine which is a positive influence on fuel economy.

Volkswagen's Turbo Direct Injection, also known as the TDI is a intercooled, turbocharged diesel engine.
Direct injection engines have the fuel injector, technology used to mix the fuel with air prior to combustion.
The Turbo Direct Injection is used in many more engines including the powerful W12 engine, inside the expensive Phaeton and W12 engine powered Audi A8.

If you read my recent article about direct injection, you know that by allowing more precise control of fuel delivery, direct injection opens the door for engineers to design a bike with a higher compression ratio that will still run safely on pump gas.
For this reason, direct injection is a perfect fit with turbocharging (which I discussed in previous articles found here and here).
Apparently, BMW feels that technology has advanced far enough to make this paradigm obsolete - company spokesmen claim the new turbo six is just as responsive as their traditional naturally-aspirated motors have been, with turbo lag all but eliminated by the higher compression ratio allowed by direct injection.

Currently, only two gasoline automobiles sold in the U.S. have direct injection for their engines — the BMW 760Li and the Rolls Royce Phantom.
Direct injection (DI) is just that; fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder, as opposed to normal fuel injection that sprays the gasoline inside the intake port.
Direct injection is done at very high pressure, which promotes more complete combustion, and the more precise metering also lowers both emissions and fuel consumption.

The Gasoline Direct Injection engine has been heralded around the world as an engine that is much kinder to the environment without sacrificing the power and response that drivers want.
In this article, we will focus on the GDI Turbo engine, which generates extra torque at both low and mid ranges for a more dynamic and relaxed performance, together with fuel economy that is on a par or better than that of a naturally aspirated engine of the same class.
In the GDI Turbo engine, boost pressure is suppressed slightly in the high supercharging zone to realize virtually the same fuel efficiency as for a naturally aspirated GDI engine at full throttle, thereby preventing a deterioration in fuel economy.

Green Car Congress: BMW Unveils New Direct-Injection, Bi-Turbo Inline Six
A gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine sprays the fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder (as opposed to a port fuel injection (PFI) or carburetor engine) and delivers significantly increased performance and decreased fuel consumption and emissions.
A spray-guided technique uses the injection procedure itself and not the charge movement to ensure that a combustible mixture is brought to the sparkplug at exactly the right time, regardless of pressure and temperature conditions.
Direct injection has nothing to do with controlling the AIR that is let into the combustion chamber.

Direct injection or Turbo Direct injection (TDi) is a different kind of diesel fuel injection system that is more efficient than indirect injection.
Direct injected motors produce more noise and heat than indirect engines which is why direct injected engines weren't found until the late 70s and have not become widely available until the 80s.
However, direct injected engines and turbo direct injected engines are now widespread and have been built to control noise is some applications and are generally more efficient.

"Turbo direct injection" refers to the way a turbo diesel engine injects fuel into the combustion chamber, where it is ignited by compressed (heated) air.
The injection is electronically controlled, which reduces the "lag" of older diesel models, reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides, reduces noise, and improves fuel efficiency.
The combustion chamber of a TDI engine involves less heat loss and allows a lower compression ratio, thus increasing engine durability and reducing noise.
