 Turbomachinery (Annual Report 97-98)
Methods for simulating the performance of turbomachinery bladerows operating in circumferentially non-uniform flows have been successfully developed.
The focus in turbomachinery CFD is now firmly on unsteady flow, design optimisation and turbulence/transition modelling.
The interest in unsteady flow is in understanding the flow physics associated with blade row interactions and also attempting to predict the blade row acoustics (transonic fan noise is being studied under the RESOUND programme).

Amazon.ca: Books: Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics of Turbomachinery   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The subject of Turbomachinery is in continual review, and while the basics do not change, research can lead to refinements in popular methods, and new data can emerge.
Turbomachinery embraces a number of devices that are classified as 'open', such as propellers, windmills and unshrouded fans.
The machines examined here are those defined as 'closed', where a finite quantity of fluid can be considered to pass through the machine in unit time, for it is these which are of the most interest to students and professionals in the fields of mechanical, chemical, and plant engineering.

Concepts NREC - Turbomachinery Design & Performance Course.
A unique feature of this course is that it bridges the gap between the performance and application of industrial turbomachines, and the fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and thermodynamics that guide the design.
The course addresses the engineering needs and problems of the turbomachinery industry by combining an appreciation of the present levels of technology with an understanding of the fundamental physical principles on which that technology is based.
The instructors have worked with the turbomachinery industry for many years, and the course draws extensively on that experience and on their appreciation of the needs of engineers working in that industry.

Fluent NEWS - Fall 2000 - Turbomachinery Supplement - Turbomachinery CFD Comes of Age   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Today, the design of all types of turomachinery, such as aircraft engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, hydro-turbines, pumps, fans, compressors, and turbochargers, is almost unthinkable without CFD as a part of the design cycle.
Moreover, as turbomachinery CFD comes of age, it is being applied throughout the range of flows involved - not only in the main flow path, but also in seals, cooling passages, bearings, bleed off-takes, and a host of related applications.
The primary importance of aerodynamics in the design of compressors and turbines ensured that their designers were among the first to seize upon the exciting possibilities offered by the then-emerging technology.

The unstable, self-excited or forced vibrations of rotor blades must be avoided in designing high performance turbomachinery components because they may induce structural failures.
They are now at a stage where fluid/structure coupled simulations of aeroelastic phenomena in turbomachinery for real geometries are in contest for practical use.
The major contribution to the aerodynamic damping for turbomachinery blade motions is observed to be the unsteady pressure generated at the location of the shock.

NASA - Turbomachinery: Spinning New Ideas
One of the first projects undertaken by the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (the predecessor of the NASA Glenn Research Center) of the when it opened in 1941 as part of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was the development of turbochargers for piston-engine aircraft used in World War II.
From this beginning, turbomachinery work was expanded to develop gas turbine engines for aircraft and cryogenic turbopumps for rocket engines.
The primary goal of turbomachinery research at Glenn has been to develop technology to help aircraft engine manufacturers design advanced turbine engines.

 Vortex Generator Model for Turbomachinery
A computational model was developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center to investigate possible uses of vortex generators (VG's) for improving the performance of turbomachinery.
VG's also turn the flow near the walls and, thus, can be used to control flow incidence into a turbomachinery blade row or to control secondary flows.
The model was implemented in a multiblock turbomachinery analysis code called SWIFT that uses an explicit finite-difference method to solve the Navier-Stokes equations.
