Two submarines of the United States Navy have been named USS Turbot for the turbot, a large, brown and white flatfish, valued as a food.
The first Turbot (SS-31), which served before World War I, was renamed G-3 before she was launched.
The second Turbot (SS-427) was a Balao-class submarine that had not been completed at the end of World War II.

USS Turbot (SS-427) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Turbot (SS-427), a Tench-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the turbot, a large, brown and white flatfish, valued as a food.
Her keel was laid down on 13 November 1943 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Cramp Shipbuilding Company, but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 12 August 1945.
Her partially completed hulk was later launched and, in 1950, was assigned to the Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Annapolis, Maryland, where it was used for research and development in connection with the control and reduction of machinery noise in submarines.

Perhaps the best single source was when we discovered that the last of the fleet boats, USS Turbot (SS-427) was at a research facility in Maryland.
Turbot was about eighty percent complete when the war ended and she was never finished.
Instead she was used as a test platform for developing technology for a number of years.

Numbering: Most submarines are numbered in a single series, designated "SS", with variations including SSN, SSBN, AGSS, etc. Some specialized types were numbered in separate SSK (hunter-killer), SST (training), SC (cruiser), SF (fleet) and SM (minelaying) series.
Some of these specialist types were later renumbered in the standard SS series.
The remaining ships will be added in due time.
