Entmoot - Chapter 21: Of Turin Turambar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Turin was born in the year that Beren came upon Luthien in Neldoreth, eight years before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and he had a sister, Lalaith, which is laughter, who was two years younger.
Turin did not speak for quite a while, he was grieving for Beleg, until Gwindor led him to Eithel Ivrin, the starting point for the Narog, and Turin drank from the water, and was healed of his madness.
Turins pride and vanity would have had less venue for development and self destrutive expression among the woodsmens with their lifstyle and partly democratic systems, than among the rich and vain court of Thingol and its intriques.

 Turin
He had a sister Lalaith, which means laughter, but she died as a result of a pestilence that came from Angband.
Upon Turin's arrival, Thingol took him and fostered him in honor of his father, Húrin.
Turin was with Thingol for nine years and during that time, due to a lack of word from his mother and sister, he chose to take up arms to help guard Doriath.

Turin grew fair and strong in Doriath, and for nine years he dwelt in that realm, but eventually,he asked for arms, and He was his fathers son,and battle was in his blood.
And Turin was renowned throughout all the land, although he changed his name constantly, for ill fortune followed him in his endeavours. The names are many that he took, but once seen,no-one would ever misread that this was the son of Hurin.
Turin's tragically complex life has a more than subtle feel of Oedipal difficulties with the slaying of a friend and the loving of a sister.

Or maybe it was Turins fate to kill the worm, but in due time, and Iluvatar, rather than take Turins will away and stay his hand in some cases, he just let it flow.
I agree that Turin was cursed with bad luck, but his doom was brought about by his bad temper and his pride, neither of which was in Morgoth's control.
This pride, coupled with his temper, is ultimately responsible for the vast majority of his difficulties, beginning with the death of Saeros, continuing through his refusal of Thingol's pardon, his establishment and the eventual fall of the freeholding on Amon Rudh, the fall of Nargothrond, and even his ill-fated marriage.

[ Daily Tolkien ] A Tolkien Virgin: Of Turin Turambar
In fact, I was somewhat expecting Turin to gouge his eyes out and wander the countryside in blindness for the rest of his life.
Ted has suggested that perhaps Tolkien's son "translated" the stories of Beren and Luthien and Turin Turambar from the much longer "lays" refered to at the begining of those two chapters--which would explain the somewhat choppy feel of their narratives.
Turin's life was met with evil after evil, true, but he has merely kept the ball rolling, if you will.

 The Tale of Turin Turambar
But ere the middle of the night the dragon roused, and with a great noise and blast cast his forward part across the chasm, and began to draw his bulk after.
Turambar and Hunthor were well-nigh overcome by the heat and stench, as they sought in haste for a way up to come at Glaurung; and Hunthor was slain by a great stone that was dislodged from on high by the passage of the dragon.
Then finding that his hand was burned she washed it with tears and bound it about with a strip of her raiment, and she kissed him and cried on him again to awake.

Turin killed the Father of Dragons with a surprise strike to his weak underbelly.
Well, IIRC there are some posthumousl published Tolkien resources according to which it will be Turin who deals the killing blow to Morgoth in the end, and that's pretty impressive.

I really liked and rather disliked the story of Turin all at the same time.
I liked him as a character, but the story is so darn tragic and utterly without any happiness.
In the last battle when Morgoth returns from the void, Turin is among the Valar and takes his vengeance on Morgoth.
