		Turisas was founded by Mathias D.G. Nygård and Jussi Wickström on a light summer night of 1997.
		In late 1999 Turisas was in a sort of a standstill and Ari found his intrests elsewhere.
		Turisas suffered major technical problems with the cover graphics; harddrives broke down and everything was lost.

		Turisas was established in the summer of 97, and from then many have joined and a few left the band, resulting in a total of 7 members as of now.
		Until recently we had heard little from Turisas, but the news of a first album being recorded in France late 2003 through Century Media was welcomed with open hearts by all Turisas enthusiasts.
		The two first tracks, "The Heart of Turisas" and the already mentioned "Til the Last Man Falls" are written by the band themselves but they also covered the old classic "Those Were the Days", with their own little twist of course.

		Quite how Turisas aren't already an established unit with several releases littering their past is a mystery, as 'Battle Metal' is a stupefying display of musical virtuosity and, most importantly, really inventive and inspiring song writing.
		Turisas offer nothing comparatively new as a band, but it's simply the strength and belief with which they do it that lingers in the memory from the word go.
		Turisas even take it up a notch or two on the more challenging 'Rex Regi Rebellis', which would be more ravaging if it wasn't prefaced by 'Prologue For R.R.R.', an unnecessary spoken-word track; the only piece of fat that needs trimming here.

		The success of the Tolkien movies have no doubt created a commercial demand for all sorts of folk and fantasy metal all over the world and this album is partly a result of that ongoing trend.
		Turisas will probably be compared to their countrymen Finntroll and Moonsorrow in many reviews but to be honest their music is quite different.
		As you may realize by now it is very difficult to describe the Turisas sound in a few words as there is so much going on here that you sometimes get lost when trying to follow every move of these hard working musicians.

		Turisas’ first full-length, Battle Metal, is definitely comparable to the work of Bal-Sagoth, though it’s also very much in the folk-metal vein of bands like Ensiferum and Finntroll.
		A big factor in Turisas’ music is also their willingness to experiment, which I’ll point out later.

		Turisas had a large turn out last time they were in London, but it was absolutely heaving tonight suggesting the band are destined for bigger things.
		Turisas is not so much about the individual as the sum of its parts which together creates a huge orchestrated sound with rousing back up vocals.
		Next stop in the UK for Turisas is an appearance at Bloodstock Open Air, where, on tonight’s evidence, they have a great chance of walking off with the whole festival.

		TURISAS were formed by Warlord Nygård and Jussi Wickström in 1997 in Hämeenlinna, a small city right in the heart of the pagan forests of South/Mid-Finland and named after an ancient Finnish war god.
		In 2000 TURISAS recorded their demo-CD The Heart of Turisas and, with the assistance of a few energetic live shows, started to catch peoples attention from both fans and labels.

		All the songs that are on "Battle Metal" have their own kind of sound, and it's all Very melodic, and all have a sense of 'Victory' hidden in them, the song "Battle Metal" has this kind of feel for example, a victorious feeling that rages through this song makes this song awesome.
		Well I guess Turisas have claimed their own place in the Folk/Pagan/Battle Metal 'scene' and did this with a very good Debut Album, I hope to hear more bands like this, I liked listening this album a lot, also the female vocals mixed with the male vocals is done very well!

		Sure, Turisas encompass all that is great about Finnish pagan/Viking metal, replete with loads of beer hall choirs and upbeat, rousing riffs, but the synth/Hammond/vibraphone work of Anti Ventola is so gregarious and garishly over the top, it compares with Bal-Sagoth’s early work.
		Turisas are so epically in your face and laden with Viking cheese, they actually make Ensiferum look like Darkthrone - it’s that over the top.
		Self deprecatingly pompous and unashamedly over the top, Turisas weave a hair raising, pulse quickening display of flened power metal that is more Ensiferum in its styling but with obvious nods to all of their peers.

		Turisas, der Namensgeber der Band, ist demnach eine alte Kriegsgottheit.

		Turisas have decided to invade these shores again but without guitarist George (still in rehab after a near death car smash) but this time they have bought over fellow countrymen Battlelore.
		The as they are about to start their third song of the night Lisko the accordian player is dragged to the front and told he is fired so he decides to skulk off as the rest of the band carry on.
		Turisas wander off again and we think its all over but they rush out again and admit they love platying London and they have one more track to play.

		Georg Laakso, the guitarist of Turisas, who was badly injured in a severe car-accident in October 2005 has left the band.
		Turisas is not looking for a replacing guitarist at the moment, but will continue doing all upcoming shows with only one guitarist as the band has already done since the accident took place.
		The band is currently concentrating on the work for a new album with a release tentatively scheduled for first early 2007.

		The genus name Anomaloteuthis stands for anomalous squid but is also an allusion to the Cambrian predator Anomalocaris, which shared some features with the newly discovered cephalopod.
		The unique anatomy of the animal came as a suprise to the team.

		Indeed The name Turisas (very similar to the name of the rune Teiwaz) should go back to an ancient Finnish god of war, maybe a kind of morphing between Thor and Tyr, though i don't find him between Aino, Ajatar, Tuonetar and company.
		All this couldn't explain better the music composed by Turisas, who, in this debut album, wonderfully create around us, like an holographic image, that varied screenplay of aggressiveness but also of light heartened feelings that marked that ancient life.
