  Favorite Hikes Turkey Run State Park
The park guide is a small foldout brochure including a brief description of each numbered trail and a park map which indicates their routes.
At the park's edge, we visited an intact covered bridge used to connect Trails 1 and 4 before circling back on Trails 1 and 2 towards the developed area of the park.
Mike and Maria drove up to Turkey Run on a Saturday afternoon in Fall, 1999, and Maria hiked a good distance through the canyon along Trail 2 on her own two feet.

The creek boundaries of the park are marked by two covered bridges, the Narrows Bridge on the east, and the Cox Ford Bridge on the west.
This part of Indiana has most of the remaining covered bridges in the state, and when your legs are worn out from hiking the trails you might want to do an auto tour of the local bridges.
If you still haven't had enough, Shades State Park is just a few miles to the east and well worth visiting.

Lycan and the State of Indiana counterclaimed on the ground that by bringing the lawsuit Shumate had breached the agreement that was part of the release that he would not bring such a lawsuit.

The first parcel of Turkey Run State Park's 2,382 acres was purchased during our State's centennial in 1916 when the State Park system was first established.
One story says that wild turkeys, finding it warmer in the canyon bottoms, or "runs", would often huddle in these runs to avoid the cold.
Since historic accounts suggest that large numbers of turkeys lived here, it follows that turkeys in the runs prompted the area's name, Turkey Run.

Laura Hamlin and I chose to travel to Turkey Run State Park for our first trip, as neither of us had been there yet.
We also thought this would give us options if the park was too crowded, since it was a very beautiful day weather-wise, as well as the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend (always a crowded time to visit any state park).
We thought that if Turkey Run looked too crowded, we could opt instead to go a couple of miles down the road to Shades State Park.

 Shades State Park
Turkey Run has a swimming pool, an inn, family cabins, horse barn, and a beautiful nature center that is staffed all year.
As a result, Turkey Run is always crowded (at least during the regular season) while Shades can offer some very uncrowded hiking; I have hiked there on some days when I never saw anyone else on the trail.
You should also be able to find a couple of covered bridges (one northeast of Shades, one on the road bordering Turkey Run’s east side) and several places selling honey and maple syrup (yum!).
