Turkmenabat (Chardzhou, Charjou, or Charjew before 1999) is a major river port in Central Asia, on the right bank of the lower Amu Dar'ya River, in the eastern part of the republic of Turkmenistan, a Central Asian state.
After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, the city became the center of the Lebap province of the republic of Turkmenistan.
At present, Turkmenabat is a major rail junction and the largest port on the Amu Dar'ya in Central Asia.

The principal line, originated from the historical Transcaspian line which was the first railway line in the whole Central Asia, connects the port of Turkmenbashi, on the shore of the Caspian sea, with the ca-pital Ashgabat and continues then to Mary and to Turkmenabat, to-wards the border with Uzbekistan.
Another important line starts from Turkmenabat, runs along the watercourse of Amu Darya reaching Da-shoguz, in the north of the country, and continues then towards Kun-grad, in Uzbekistan.
Turkmenabat it is advisable to make use of night trains with sleeping-car service, which leave the capital late in the evening and reach their destination in the following morning.

Most of their families came here during World War II from Ukraine, but there are also some Jewish families living in Turkmenabat, on the border with Uzbekistan, who are members of the community known as "Bokharski" Jews, referring to the city of Bokhara, in Uzbekistan.
