Interpol: Turn On The Bright Lights (2002): Reviews
For such a dark and brooding record, Turn on the Bright Lights is also unexpectedly thrilling, coasting on jagged minor-chord guitar melodies and huge emotional swells with a ton of high points along the way.
Plainly stated, Turn on the Bright Lights is the album modern followers of post-punk have been waiting for.
Bright Lights isn't a trudging soundtrack to depression; it's laced with upbeat, albeit bittersweet, songwriting.

Turn On the Bright Lights is an absolute must for anyone who missed Echo and The Bunnymen, the Furs or Joy Division the first time round.
Their debut album, Turn On The Bright Lights, is an exhilarating ride through dank subway cars, couches to crash on, despair, and isolation.
Turn on the Bright Lights begins with the shivering "Untitled", which opens with a pulsing, solitary guitar filtered through echoing effects that carry on for over half a minute.

Turn on the Bright Lights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Turn on the Bright Lights was New York City rock band Interpol's first full-length album.
It was released in 2002 on Matador Records to a great deal of critical acclaim and sold exceptionally well for an indie release; it has sold 438,000 copies so far.
Musically, many have pointed out the similarities between Turn on the Bright Lights and the bands Joy Division and The Chameleons.

The early '80s subgothic, postpunk are clearly Interpol's obsession on Turn On the Bright Lights.
Though stylishly clad in suits and ties and unmistakably a New York band, their music is a literate, atmospheric, always-moody, sometimes-trashy postpunk often recalling the Psychedelic Furs, particularly with "PDA," "Obstacle 2," "Roland," and "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down." And this is definitely a good thing.
Fortunately, those problems I have with "Bright Lights" have been addressed on "Antics", and my enthusiasm for that album is such that I think I'm finally able to see some of the better aspects of this one.

[fmSound] Reviews - Interpol "Turn on the Bright Lights"
But whereas fellow New Yorkers such as the Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs tend to draw on the shambolic, noisy and confrontational aspects of said music, the introverts of Interpol are more naturally drawn to its stark, austere, and downright icy tones and arrangements.
Turn on the Bright Lights recalls a time when bands made liberal use of understated, chiming guitars, prominent bass lines and a predilection for all things dark.
Interpol seem to have done the bands in their record collections justice by paying them not only the sincerest form of flattery but by also adding their own unique and incontrovertible spin along the way.

In fact, Turn On The Bright Lights sounds like a more varied album by The Strokes, though with Ian Curtis of Joy Division as the singer.
Another great feature of Turn On The Bright Lights is the abundance of catchy and well-written music, which makes for a disc that is likable from start to finish.
Turn On The Bright Lights begins with “Untitled,” a dream-like song with soaring guitar melodies.

Splendid Magazine reviews Interpol: Turn On the Bright Lights
He's in better shape on "PDA", singing hopefully over the song's rhythmic layered guitars and reveling in the major-key chorus, although the music counters with its own lingering cynicism; upbeat finish aside, it's a song as uncertain as the romance of former enemies.
And if Banks ever decides to hang himself -- unlikely, given the fact that Bright Lights' sharpened notes owe more to recording quality than youthful desperation -- "Hands Away" offers ample evidence that his bandmates will be able to muster a credible synth-pop outfit in his memory.
It's easy to laud the band as heirs to the post-punk throne, especially if you're tired of sound-alike garage bands, but there's little here that suggests Interpol has a game-plan for moving beyond the scope of their influences.

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights - Review
It was just a couple months ago now that Matador gave Interpol the grand treatment with a specially-priced and very nicely-designed self-titled EP meant to introduce the band to the world.
While I was moderately impressed with the EP, one of the things that simply frustrated me (like many EPs, which is actually sort of their goal) was the short length.
It's easy to get a quick taste of a group in 15 minutes, but obviously harder to figure out their complete sound, which Turn On The Bright Lights expands on and spreads its wings nicely.

It's a city album — every immaculate surface of the recording is spit-shined with carefully calibrated reverb redolent of skyscraper lobbies and urban canyons.

Much of the album has a driving, unrelenting style that makes you want to keep turning up the volume.

Normal people would feel embarrassed at having been seen in such a vulnerable position, but I just felt pity that he had not seen the light this summer as I had, lacking the realization that Turn On the Bright Lights is worth any mortification.
Often I would plead, in unison with the lead singer Paul Banks, for someone (anyone) to “wake up to me now/ turn on the bright lights,” a statement so simple yet so sincere in its delivery that it cannot help but be effective.
There are no misses on this album, only different shades of “good”, and in light of this I can only hope that my roommate and anyone else who reads this will not judge me too harshly for my failure at rock-stardom.

The ’80s are known as the period when artifice smothered musical soul like so much lip gloss.
Turn on the Bright Lights revels in minor keys and clear, wiry bass/guitar tones that bring to mind Wire, New Order or early U2, while lead singer Paul Banks combines the flat delivery of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis with the wounded shakiness of the Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano, or David Byrne at his most sensitive.
It adds up to a pained and compelling sound that feels like it’s mostly their own.

The gripping "PDA", already a New York jukebox classic, burns with the intelligent rage so characteristic of The Fall; "Say Hello to the Angels" uses a bopping minor guitar chord progression that's reminiscent of the Pixies; "The New" has the bruising emotion of Echo & the Bunnymen.

Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later.
Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS.
Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable.

Released nearly a year ago now, if you’re one of those people riding the trends from one hot band to another, you could’ve even moved on by now, as Interpol enjoyed their initial popularity due to the drastic hype they’d received as one of the next “it” bands out of NYC.
But that’s what’s most refreshing about this debut – the fact that Turn on the Bright Lights ultimately works as a piece which will be viewed apart from its timely hype as a largely overlooked classic of the early 21st Century.

Throughout the album the languid music speaks with as much purpose and articulation as the elusive lyrics, giving Interpol's music a sense of intellect and depth that few bands ever succeed in attaining.  Though the tone may be dark, Turn On the Bright Lights is definitely a bright light in an otherwise dreary musical genre.
