Yankton County is a county located in the state of South Dakota.
The county is divided into nine townships: Gayville, Jamesville, Marindahl, Mayfield, Mission Hill, Turkey Valley, Utica, Violin, Walshtown; and two areas of unorganized territory: Southeast Yankton and West Yankton.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older.

In the gold rush of 1875ndash;1878, thousands of miners went to the Black Hills, and in 1880 the area was the most densely populated part of Dakota Territory with three large towns in the Northern Hills: Deadwood, Central City, and Lead.
Dakota Territory was the name of the northernmost part of the Louisiana Purchase of the United States.
Unlike the rest of the Dakotas, the Black Hills was primarily settled from the west and south, as a result of miners flocking to the Hills from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana.

He was baptized on June 1, 1903, in the Bethesda Mennonite Church, Marion, and later became a member of the Salem Zion Mennonite Church, Freeman.
He taught school for 17 years in Nebraska and South Dakota, the last nine of which he was principal and superintendent of Freeman High School.
