Mancelona Township - actually two townships rolled into one, this township was organized by act of legislature, approved Jan. 18, 1871 and comprised one township from Otsego County as well as one from Antrim County.

 Aurelius Township Michigan Early Settlement
Bullen early in 1837, and lived in the township until the fall of the same year, when he removed to the village of Jefferson, in Alaiedon township.
The first settler in the southeast part of the township was John Barnes, from Cayuga Co, N. Y., who purchased land in September, 1836, on sections 23 and 26, and settled with his family in June, 1837, half a mile east of what is now Aurelius Centre.
He was among the most prominent citizens in the township, and his sons, Orlando M., Zaccheus, and John A., have also become worthy and respectred citizens.

The Okaw, or Kaskaskia river flows through two sections on the west side of the township; Sand creek drains the centre of the township from east to west; Lick creek and Carr creek are two small streams in the south part, tributaries of Sand creek.
Originally the west part of the township was heavily timbered along the Okaw; the land is considerably broken.
Daniel Miner came to the township in 1838; his wife, who was a Miss Ledbetter, came to the county in 1824, with her parents.

Turnerville, one of Turner Township's ghost towns, was located about one mile northeast of Twining, a village that was no-existent until the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad was built years later.......
Turner dismantled the narrow-gauge railroads and hauled them away in 1866 to lumber elsewhere.
