Turneraceae are herbs to woody plants that may be recognised by their often very hairy, serrate, exstipulate leaves with strong secondary venation.
Turneraceae are the hosts of caterpillars of several genera of Nymphalidae, alternate hosts include Salicaceae, Passifloraceae, and Violaceae (Arbo 2006 and references).

My current research program is divided into a number of initiatives that examine the evolution of plant chemical defenses and the evolution of host specialization, particularly of insects that are obligate herbivores of particular plant species due to hostplant chemistry.
The Neotropical plant, Turnera ulmifolia (Turneraceae) possesses a well-documented cyanogenesis polymorphism (Schappert and Shore 1995, 1999a, b, 2000).
While much is known about the action of HCN as a defense of this species against invertebrate herbivores, the plants also possess extrafloral nectaries and seeds with elaiosomes or accessory protein bodies that are attractive to ants.

 Joel S. Shore
We have continued to study the genetics and evolution of breeding systems in a largely Neotropical plant family, the Turneraceae, and especially in the genus Turnera.
A majority of species in the genus are distylous and strongly self-incompatible, while other species are self-compatible often having anthers and stigmas in close proximity, leading to high rates of self-fertilization.
Western blots are being used to test the hypothesis that homostylous breeding systems have arisen through recombination in a putative supergene that controls distyly.
