Chiswick: Social and cultural activities | British History Online
At least 5 inns in 1759 were at Turnham Green, including the Pack Horse, (Footnote 61) so called by 1698, (Footnote 62) whose licensee's widow in 1791 had been 'much respected by the nobility and gentry travelling the great western road'.
It was called Turnham Green cricket club from 1884, (Footnote 81) after some members had founded the Chiswick Park Cricket and Lawn Tennis Co., (Footnote 82) which by 1900 had divided into separate cricket and lawn tennis clubs.
Turnham Green Literary and Scientific Society met in 1890 in Heathfield Terrace and in 1908 at the town hall, where Chiswick Scientific and Literary Society, presumably its successor, still met in 1926.

Existing signalling at Turnham Green is not sophisticated enough to hold a train very close to the station so they have to wait a long way back.
If the signalling was relatively cheap and easy to upgrade for a stop at Turnham Green (there is no conclusive evidence that this is the case) LUL would probably be able to introduce a stop with relatively little impact on frequencies very soon.
If the GLA felt that the benefit of a stop at Turnham Green outweighed the impact on frequencies then there is no reason that it couldn't commit in principle to a stop being introduced as soon as Transport for London (the GLA body that will oversee the tube) takes over.

Still known simply as the high road or Brentford Road in the 18th century, when it was turnpiked, (Footnote 19) it was placed under the metropolitan turnpike roads commissioners in 1826 as the 'great western road', a description which was later to apply to a new route farther south.
