Origins of Jewish Last Names in Turov   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In 1765, 316 Jews lived in Turov; by 1847 that number had grown to 1447.1 Turov was considered a shtetl of the Mozyr uezd in the Minsk guberniya and was within the boundary of the "Jewish settlement line".2 The main sources of revenue for the residents were trade and handicrafts.
Turov Jews received their permanent last names in a manner similar to the Jews in the Russian empire approximately 150-200 years ago.
This same method was used to classify emigrants from Turov and served as a basis for the emergence of last names with the root "Turov"- Turov, Turover, Turovski, etc. It is therefore clear that in Turov, there could not have been any Jewish families with such last names.

The area was settled by a Slavic tribe called the Dregovichians, who were originally centered around the city of Turov, not too far to the east of David-Horodok.
Sviatopolk subsequently seized Kiev, promptly murdered three of his brothers, and was then defeated in a four-year struggle with another brother, Yaroslav “the Wise.” David-Horodok, part of the Turov Principality, continued to pass from hand to hand by murder, war and/or diplomacy as long as Kievan Princes ruled.
The practice was so widespread that the Slavs gave their name to the world in the form of the word “slave.” Converting to Judaism might not have solved the problem.
