Turrican was created by Manfred Trenz, a legend among the Commodore 64 programming scene, and first released by Rainbow Arts in 1990.
Turrican 3 was released for the Amiga and Genesis (as Mega Turrican).

Turrican 1and2 were (well) ported to the ST, however they lacked the colors and stereo sound/music of the Amiga versions.
Turrican 3 was finished together with Super Turrican and Mega Turrican in 1993 and were all produced by Factor5.

Overall I think the Turrican series are a classic because it combined state of the art technology (in that time) with variation in levels.
Turrican 2's shmup levels were great (they should have converted Aerofighters with that engine!), but I enjoyed most of them, because they were so HUGE.
When Turrican said "Power Up" he really sounded like Rimmer from Red Dwarf and on the level 1:1 when you kill one of the those dragon type things that are attached to the ground in some cave, there was always a power up right there, after picking it up.

Regardless of that I miss the main tune from Turrican II and a few other great tunes but those that are on this CD is very good.

Turrican is a very arcade-like shooter that while fun, is a bunch of button mashing trying to blow everything up.
What's fascinating about the comparison, though, is that while Metroid and Turrican are so similar, the communities were (and are!) so well segregated that I doubt many people have had the pleasure of trying both titles.

T2002 is a freeware remake of the original game and was made by Pekaro with friendly permission of THQ (they bought RainbowArts) and the gradmaster of computermusics Chris Hülsbeck (who composed the tunes for the original Turricans).
My first contact with the original Turrican was in the early 90s where it took half of my childhood to play it over and over again on my C-64.
Other weapons are a stron laser, a pulsegun with reflecting projectiles (if you hit a wall they return by 135 degrees) and of course a multiminiflamelaserwhatever.

I first played Turrican on the C64 when I was about 10 and it was amazing.
What set Turrican aside from all the other platform games out there is the sheer size of the levels and the amount of exploration you can do.
I really do think that a new Turrican game on a console such as the GBA or Nintendo DS would be a great idea.

As i've seen several threads talking of Turrican music, here are links to two compilations with a selection of tunes recorded from Amiga versions of the games.
Another fine example is Apydia) but that software gave the feel of a lot more to the song as there could be a lot more samples playing at the same time.
I would have to agree with you that both the turrican and apydia (arranged) albums are the best of his albums....

I loved the soundtrack from Turrican 2 (the amiga music that is)!.
