Tursiops truncatus is a cosmopolitan species found in both tropical and temperate waters of the world's oceans (Wells and Scott 1999).
Tursiops truncatus is found throughout the Indian River Lagoon, with a resident population estimated to be between 200 and 800 individuals.

 Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
The genus Tursiops is polymorphic and at least 20 species have been described (Mead and Potter 1990).
Because systematic works have been conducted on relatively small sample sizes and restricted geographic areas, however, there is not a general consensus on the validity of these species (Mead and Potter 1990, Ross and Cockcroft 1990).
The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a cosmopolitan species and found in almost all oceans except for the very high latitude.

The Tursiops is born with 42.5% of its final brain weight and takes 9 to 10 years to reach adult levels.
The nasal opening is shifted to the left of the cranial midline and in Tursiops the echolocation beam is projected slightly to the left, which may help explain the RH advantage in cortical surface area.
Tursiops have five different kinds of vocalizations, echolocation and four which is involved in communication.

the Tursiope has a powerful swim and it is capable to catch up speeds that exceed 30 Km/h; it possesses remarkable acrobatic abilities and often goes nearby boats pushing itself in the bow wave.
Beacons of its presence are the appearance on water surface of the dorsal fin and the back, when the animal emerges to breathe, or sprays caused by its movement in the water (jumps and fast swim).
The Tursiope it is a not frequently seen cetaceum in Liguria Sea, especially in the western portion; in fact, it turns out to be one of the species less sighted during the whale excursions watching.

CMS: Tursiops aduncus, Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphin
This congruence is strong evidence that the sympatric morphotypes in Chinese waters are reproductively isolated and comprise two distinct species, with important implications for the conservation of bottlenose dolphins in Chinese waters.
Investigations by Curry (1997) indicate the separation of Tursiops aduncus and Tursiops truncatus into two clades: Tursiops aduncus ranges along the coast of eastern Africa from Cape Province north to the Red Sea, thence eastward through the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal, as far as Taiwan, thence south-east to northern Australia.
Stock delineations are necessary to assess the impacts of die-off and fishery mortalities on bottlenose stocks, and to conserve population units (Curry, 1997).

Abstract: Bottlenose dolphins (tursiops truncatus) collected during the 1987/88 mass mortality event along the Atlantic coast of the United States have been analyzed for coplanar pcbs #77, 105, 126 and 169 in blubber, and for the metals hg, pb, cd, mn, and cr, and the non-metallic element Se in liver.
Autopsied bottlenose dolphins, tursiops truncatus, which were collected from the large-scale mortality along the Atlantic coast in 1987 to 1988, exhibited opportunistic infections indicative of immune dysfunction.
Stranding records of neonatal dolphins and observed births from a long-term field study were used to estimate peak periods of birth for wild populations, and information from captive-breeding colonies was used to assess the effects of latitude and origin of breeding females on timing of birth for dolphins in captivity.

It may surprise some people that, scientists have actually classified over 35 different species of marine and freshwater dolphins.
These different dolphin species display a wide variety of body shapes, sizes and color patterns, however, the "classic" gray bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is certainly the one most widely recognized.
Not only is this the species most often found in zoological parks and aquariums, but it is also the one usually featured in the popular press, television shows and movies, such as "Flipper".
