Erected by the Alabama Centennial Commission and the citizens of Tuscaloosa and dedicated December 14, 1919, on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of Alabama's admission to the Union of States.
Tuscaloosa, the county seat is situated on the Black Warrior River, and is 55 miles southwest of Birmingham, 104 miles northwest of Montgomery, and 100 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi.
Tuscaloosa was incorporated in 1819 and in 1826 became the state capitol, a distinction held until 1846.
