		Originally constructed as a new route for the Appalachian Trail in response to development pressures in Northern Virginia, the 248-mile Tuscarora Trail became an extended side trail when the AT became a National Scenic Trail.

		I walked along it for about a half a mile and then turned left to ascend the Tuscarora-Overall Run Trail This trail paralleled Overall Run, which I would be walking along for the next 5 miles as I ascended the mountain.
		I left the Tuscarora Trail and turned right onto the Mathews Arm Trail, which had a sign that said the campground was 1.3 miles.
		Anyway, the Tuscarora Trail is a great place to hike for the experienced backpacker that wants solitude and a challenge.

		The Tuscarora Trail is the northern portion of an extensive bypass route of the Appalachian Trail in PA.,MD., W-VA., and VA. This route is approximately 220 miles long and connects the Appalachian Trail at both ends.
		The Tuscarora Trail (named after the Indians of that name) departs to the west from Appalachian Trail at the top of Blue Mountain in Deans Gap about 13 miles west of the Susquehanna River and Harrisburg, PA. This occurs just before the Appalachian Trail descends south to make its crossing of the Cumberland Valley.
		At the end of the Tuscarora Mountain it descends, passes into Maryland were it joins and uses the Towpath of the CandO Canal to the town of Hancock, MD. Here it crosses the Potomac River and connects to the Big Blue Trail.

		We all met at a small county park right where the Tuscarora Trail crosses WV9 near Hedgesville, WV around 9am on the morning of the 13th.
		We plan to do the Tuscarora Trail from the Potomac River to WV 9 and then from WV690 to the Virginia line.

		The last time I went on this trail, I did some damage to my Jeep, got reminded that I was mortal, and had a tough time getting myself under control and back out to pavement.

		It was created only a few years ago by a merging of the old TT in Pennsylvania with the Big Blue Trail in Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia.
		The ice was so thick on the tree branches that they drooped heavily over the trail and battered the runners with their icy fingers.
