		The album was one of the first to employ digital mixing.
		The name for the album Tusk was inspired by a giant mammoth tusk in the museum of a small town called Saffron Walden, in Essex, England.
		Tusk is often played at USC Trojan football games by the marching band with the fans chanting "UCLA sucks" at their crosstown rivals.

		The album was certified gold and still hit the Top 20 on the Billboard 200, but it was nowhere near the level of success of previous Fleetwood Mac albums, and it is one of the band's least commercially- and critically-successful albums.
		The album featured collaborations with Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) on the country duet "Too Far from Texas," and Macy Gray on the soft, funky "Bombay Sapphires." Nicks began writing actively for the album in 1994 and 1995 with "Trouble in Shangri-La" and "Love Is," as she came out of her Klonopin dependency.
		The album, Say You Will, was released to positive reviews in April 2003 and became a Top 3 hit on the Billboard 200, supported by a mammoth, extensive world tour lasting until September 2004, as well as two DVD releases: the concert film Live in Boston and the documentary Destiny Rules.

	The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Tusk
		It is unfortunate that was the case, as Tusk is a near brilliant album, pushing the boundaries of what "pop" music was in the early 1980's.
		On Tusk, the balance is decidedly in Buckingham's favor, but the other two are not excluded, not by a long shot.
		The double album is usually indicative of the success of a band, coming at the height of their popularity.

		Tusk is a landmark album, to say the least.
		Overall, "Tusk" is no "Rumours" it's the aftermash and while some fans may be dissapointed by it's quite diffrent sound, it's still a wonderful album.
		"Tusk" released in 1979 was Fleetwood Mac's third album with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham after "Fleetwood Mac" in 1975 and the groundbreaking "Rumours" from 1977.

		Buckingham took a lot of heat for the album’s relative "failure" (though four million copies of an expensive—some say "over-priced"—double album is really the equivalent of eight million records sold, not bad by any standards), but he will undoubtedly have the last laugh.
		Tusk is not going to sound dated in five or ten years, and I would be willing to bet that a lot more people will slowly be convinced of the album’s greatness than will forget all about it.
		The album’s producer, Keith Olsen, used tapes he made with the duo to pitch his own talents to Mick Fleetwood, and the drummer was impressed with both Olsen and Buckingham/Nicks.

		Like The Beatles "White Album," Tusk is a simply an error in judgement; an album that should have been reduced to 11 or 12 songs, with the others either being scrapped or used for Mirage, which certainly could have benefitted from inclusion of just one or two of the better Tusk tracks.
		A double-live album from the "Tusk" tour, this is a pleasant, but often lacking document of the band live in it's classic lineup.
		Supposedly this is her second solo album, the first coming in 1970 before she joined Fleetwood Mac, although I've hardly ever heard mention of this disc, and I doubt it's still in print in any form.

		In the late 70s Fleetwood Mac's Rumours was one of those albums that was impossible to avoid, and was proof that having messy relationships with other members of your band and writing catchy songs about them could make you very popular.
		Its follow up, Tusk, was a different story; a critical and commercial flop (though yielding a couple of hits), its four sides were dominated by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham's increasingly eccentric musical vision.

		The second single taken from the album was Stevie's beautiful "Rhiannon", which proved to be even a bigger hit than "Over My Head" reaching #11 on the charts.

		In the ensuing years, Tusk has not enjoyed the reputation that Fleetwood Mac or Rumours has had, and that's a shame, because the album is easily as strong as those two albums, although it's quite different from them.
		Both albums are eccentric and fragmented, and on each, the band members (at least the ones that write songs) come through as very distinct, individual personalities, much more so than on previous albums.
		Without a doubt "Tusk" is one of the strangest, but best songs I have ever heard, with a marching band, spoken lyrics, and background voice (some of you might remember the live version on "The Dance", keep in mind that the original is not too similar).

		The bass mainly doubles the guitar, but is beyond thick, and occasionally mangles your senses with a fretboard raping worthy of thrown goats, although the rest of the band is so loud and noisey that you hardly realize the undulating rhythms.
		Where Pelican delivers fury with drama, Tusk goes for your jugular and drinks from it after wrenching it from your puny throat, without the fanfare of identifying, stalking, and eventually slaying a victim.

		Whether he is singing one of his own songs from the new Tusk album or backing Nicks or McVie on one of their tunes, Buckingham plays and looks like a man possesed -- his fixed stare never leaving the audience, a sinister grin never leaving his face.
		But, while it may not hold together well as a unified album, the individual performances on Tusk are nevertheless outstanding, especially Buckingham's which display a startling new approach to recording structure, mix and instrumentation.

		The final song of his to grace the album, the title track, is pure musical spectacle, especially considering the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band were invited to record their own take of the central riff in the middle of Dodger Stadium.
		The listener is almost forced into voyeuristic behaviour in the sense that nearly all of the songs written for the album concern the breakdown of a relationship with another member of the same band.
		Whereas The White Album was about four talented musicians struggling to cope with the fact that they couldn't be in a band with one another anymore, Tusk is an album in which five nervous-breakdowns somehow equated to good music.

		Yet, the ‘Tusk’ album as a whole was actually outstanding, a masterpiece on its own, but the public did not like or want to hear it!
		The fact they were actually quite good, cohesive and well produced albums was irrelevant, they did not really match the impact that ‘Thriller’ did in 1982, and nothing he has done of late seems to have done any better either.
		After that, no great chart shakes as far as album sales were concerned, and yet they made the most amazing albums in the early eighties, with ‘Boonoonoonoos’ in 1981 and ‘Ten Thousand Light Years’ in 1984 respectively.

		I have been waiting years for this album to be remastered and re-released.
		The only differences here (which for me makes this a 5 star album, not the 4 stars I gave it when first released on cd) are the improvement in sound overall.
		On one end of the spectrum is the soft tones of the somewhat distressful "That's All for Everyone," while the thunderous stampede of the avant garde title track (#8 Pop) is on the clear opposite end.

		The new album will be about the same length as our two previous "full lengths," but this time we've gotten more efficient and pared it down to one song.

		And Lindsey Buckingham's home recordings that show up here are a virtual blueprint for the indie-rock home-recording scene that would flourish nearly 20 years later.
		I first bought a copy of Tusk 20 years ago in '79, having just cottoned on to Rumours two years too late!
		I only wish that the CD contained the full version of Sara as the original album did as it is again a classic example of Stevies' ability to ring the most out of a very simple set up.
