The purpose of the research was to study levels of sedimentation on the river and to determine the source of this sedimentation.
Preliminary results showed the Tuul River, a tributary to the Selenga, had the highest levels of disturbance due to significant gold mining activities on the river.

Recently concluded research suggests that the Tuul river, which runs through the south of Ulaanbaatar, has high levels of pollution, much of which comes from the central sewage treatment plant.
The report says that highly polluted water is allowed to enter the river from the sewage plant, making up 25 to 30 percent of the volume of the river at that point.
The report judges there to be little pollution entering the river directly from the city and it is not until it passes Songino Mountain and soums in Tov aimag further downstream that the river becomes badly polluted.
